:bang: ok, I'm going off to college next year and unfortunatly as a freshman I have to live in the dorms and dorms don't permit pets. The responsibility of caring for my snake would pass to my little brother, but just to give you a glimpse into his responsibility, he found amusment in breaking the tails off his gerbils. My friend offered to take her, but she has never had any pets before much less one thats not your typical cat, dog or hampster. Has anyone else had this problem? :sobstory:

Cornsnakes make good closet pets. :grin01:

Seriously though...they don't need light, just heat. So you could EASILY set up a 10gal aquarium in your closet. Not that I would ever advocate sneaking a pet into the dorm... :cool:

If that's not an option, maybe you could put up an ad on Craigslist...or try to educate your friend to care for corns. They're much easier than any furry or feathered pet.
 
Don't stay in a dorm!!! Just use your housing money from the loans *whatnot* and get an apartment with some roomies!

It's my guess the college or university will not allow freshman to stay off campus. If you can go for it, but I would check first as many off campus houses don't allow pets either.
I recently went back to school to get masters, I stayed in dorm a couple of semesters, and took a snake (no it wasn't allowed) all was good until there was a fire in the main lounge in the middle of the night. Thinking it was a drill I didn't grab the snake, I worried the entire time he would die, it wasn't fun. He went home the next weekend. good luck, susan
 
just sneak it in ur dorm a week or so after you move in so you can get a feel for who you have to hide it from...and just make sure it's cool with your roomate. My freshman year of college, i was in a dorm, and i snuck a hedgehog in that was small enough at the time to fit in a 10 gallon aquarium. Everybody loved her and it was fine :) good luck!

I'd say give it a shot, but have a plan B.

If they find it, the worse they'll do it tell you to get rid of it. It's not like they'll kick you our or anything. And in the mean time, teach your friend to look after it anyway, just in case.

Most Colleges and Uni's have loopholes to get around the freshman rule. I think it's absurd to require all incoming freshman to live on campus. What a great way to start your college career deeper in debt! :twoguns: If you must live on campus most RA's etc should give you plenty of notice for room checks and such. Even if you do get caught it really depends if your RA is a nazi or not about rules. Keep us posted!
 
yeesh, I do not want to even tell you what i have seen in college rooms or what I kept in my dorm room when I lived on campus.
 
major thanks for the moral support. I think I'll try to take her with me, if it's alright with my room mate. and I'll find a solution for plan B.
 
I guess I'm a little late on this thread, but...

Until May of this year, I lived in a dorm. Which doesn't allow pets. Now, remember that I've had all of my snakes longer than that.

The big thing is that you look into the consequences: What will happen if you DO get caught? If the university tells you to get rid of the animal, it kinda sucks, but overall not that bad. If the university kicks you out of the dorms, it might not be worth it.

It might also be worthwhile to check the exact wording of the rules and regulations. For instance, some leases will say that "fishtanks" are permitted. ;)

Of course, I'm not recommending that you break any university rules.

Btw, where are you going? Do you know?
 
There might be people here on the forum who would take your snake for you if you look. Jade is in Illinois... not sure where compared to you. She has my amel in her classroom. Has anyone done anything about your brother that tortures animals? Most of the murderers out there were torturers of animals as children. I'd be very concerned! Don't want to sound mean, but that's very disturbing.
 
I'll be at Southern Illinois University Carbondale next year. And my family is kinda complicated. He's my half brother and doesn't live with me, so when I found out, neither of my parents could do anything about it cuz we don't have full custody. I'lll check the dorm rules again. I'm also looking into local vet offices in Carbondale that may want to hire me, and would be willing to let me take care of her there.
 
Your best bet would be to see if someone one this site would be willing to watch your corn until your able to move out of the dorms. I'm sure that if you would be willing to pay for feeding you could find someone on here. Then you would not have to worry as much because you would know your snake is in good hands.

I have two snakes in a place where I'm not supposed to have any pets (I go to Penn State) - They arn't that hard to hide! :) But if you need someone to take care of it for a while I'm sure someone is around that would be happy too.
 
Although I have to be honest - the land lady has seen them (and she actually is a fan of snakes) so she basically told me not to let anyone else know I have them... It worked out in my favor really!

My university made me write a paper and pay a $15 fee to see the "disciplinary head". I think she was pretty amused actually. Judging from the kids who were waiting outside her office I think she generally dealt with much heavier subjects. If you decide to sneak your snake in with you in the dorms make sure it absolutely cannot get out. If you have a year to prepare then you'll probably have enough time to learn the ropes enough to keep your animal safely in his cage while living in the dorms.

If you do get caught with your snake however, the consequence of getting rid of it is a horrible aspect. If you know someone off campus who will baby sit your snake for you then thats a start. You can't be sure the snake is going to get proper care from that person however.

Two years seems like a long time to wait, but it might be worth it. Plus, once you start getting corns you may not want to stop. One corn in the dorms might not be too hard to smuggle in, but what about the 5 more that you will need.
 
I agree with the Caging. Seriously, if you get your snake into the Dorm. DO NOT let your Room mate have access to your pet. Seriously, this will nip any future problems, also get a CRITTER CAGE and a lock for it. No aquariums with screen tops. You want a critter cage and then a lock for it. This way you can be assured that no one will let your pet out while you are gone out of your room.
 
You could use a tub that would easily slide under your bed. That way when your RA does a room check the snake would be well hiden from sight. Not that I would EVER advocate having pets in a place with a "no pet" policy(look at my list of critters in my signature and know I live in an apartment with a no pet policy). I obviously have been able to skirt the situation on more then one occasion. LOL

Wow! I'm impressed How do you keep parakeets from being noticed? You'd need some sound-proof room, lol!

And as for the collage I've been already thinking of what I am going to do with my corns snakes once I go to collage, because that is why my parents are refusing to let the collection expand indefinitely. As said, finding someone on the forums to take care of your snake is the best option, but I still like the idea of hiding them underthe bed, or in the closet or something!! :grin01:
