Colonel Slithers Jun '08 Abbott's Okeetee - Progression Thread!

Colonel Slithers is looking REALLY nice, and he's really put on some size since you first posted photos of him. You're apparently handling him often, which partially accounts for his being super tame. Keep feeding him; he's way on his way to becoming a monster!

Hey guys. Haven't posted in a while, but I took some video of the Colonel drinking yesterday and thought I would share. It is fun to show this to non-snake owners, since they've no idea how snakes drink.

So, he's doing well, but throughout the winter I've noticed he's been eating less. Last week he didn't want to eat at all & he's not in shed, this week he only ate 1 of 2 hoppers I offered. I want to feed him weaned mice since he's only eating 1 of 2 prey items most of the time, and he needs bigger sized food than 1 hopper. I can't get them anywhere though. Last time I weighed him in Dec he was 170 g and I tried to move him up to small adult mice (~19 g, the Petco ones, I don't have a better source). He wouldn't have anything to do with swallowing these. I think he could do it, but he's being a snot about it. Maybe his appetite will come back with warmer days?
 
I bet his appetite will return when it gets warmer...maybe he is looking for a mate? Don't they lose interest in food this time of year?

Either way..he is absolutely gorgeous!
 
Jen, Kernel also doesn't eat much during winter. I live in the Texas Panhandle, and since the end of October Kernel has only eaten 3 adult mice. He just seems to hibernate during the winter, and looks fine. Having my indoor temp set at 72 degrees probably accounts for some of his laziness, but I can't afford to raise the house thermostat up anymore. I expect him to begin eating normally by the end of March. Col. Slithers is nothing short of awesome!

Thanks for the reassurance. My house heat is set from between 60-65 during the winter. I don't have zoned heat, and I just can't afford to crank it to even 70 (which I would consider tropical, haha). I keep his UTH on a thermostat & I've put a 40 watt red bulb in a lamp to raise the temp to ~70 (looks like it's 69.1 in there now). Plus, he lives in the office which is a small room w/ computer so it is usually the warmest place in the house. I can't wait until it warms up and his appetite picks up. I want a giant snake!!!
 
He'll get there. I last weighed Kernel (May '08 Abbotts) the middle of October and he weighed 297 grams then. As I said, his growth slows down during the winter, but picks back up in the springtime. I've got a Coastal Rosy Boa that is doing the same - brumating, I suppose.

Speaking of feeding & all...so I weighed him and he was 230 grams last week. He now falls in the adult mouse category on the Munson plan. He's a Jun '08, so almost 2 now. So, I know what size food he should be eating, but I don't know when to consider him an adult. Any advice on when I should cut down feeding to every 11-14 days instead of every 6-7 which I'm doing now?
 
hey there, forum. it's getting dark earlier & i am surfing the internets more.

thought i would post some fall themed pics with the colonel since i haven't posted anything in quite a while. he's 2 yrs 3 months old now, 319 grams before feeding this past weekend, and about 3 ft long. so much bigger than the little 55 g guy that showed up over a year ago.

he wouldn't stay still, so these kind of suck, but you get the idea:
