***Consumer Report Aspen Review***

OK, not really an official consumer report but I want to share my experience with Premier Pet Aspen Bedding from PetSmart.

I always used Kaytee Brand Aspen Bedding until PetSmart reciently discontinued carrying it. I figured aspen is aspen just shreaded differently, right? ... WRONG!!!

If you haven't tried Premier Pet Aspen Bedding yet consider yourself lucky. It smelled ok when I put it in the viv but as soon as pee or poo is added is smells like a barn. :puke01:

Luckily I found Kaytee Brand Aspen Bedding available from Drs. Foster and Smith and shipping costs are very reasonable.

Just my $.02...:)

I agree with you... I've used Premier Pet Aspen and JUST finished the bag... Now I've gone back to Kaytee Brand Aspen and am happy again.

OMG, that is EXACTLY how I described it!!! You know, if you look on eBay, you can find 4 cu ft of Kaytee delivered for $12....

I thought it had the barn smell (not the good barn smell, either, the dirty barn smell!) right out of the bag.

THAT is good to know, Nanci!! If the store I'm buying from runs out, I'll definitely do the Ebay thing! :)

Yeah the new stuff is crap its to big, Im not sure if I would put it in with my little guys or not. My big fellow does fine in it but he is able to move it around without to much of a problem.

I usually use regularly shredded aspen if I use it (as opposed to paper towel or recycled chips), but recently I tried http://www.petco.com/product/14364/Zoo-Med-Aspen-Snake-Bedding.aspx, which is finer and made specifically for snakes. I love the stuff, it works great, but a bit of a trade-off with the price.

I use the zoo med snake apsen myself and do not have any issues with smell or anything. I loaded up on two bigs bags the last sale they had.

We buy our Kaytee Aspen from the local herp guy because petsmart stopped selling it. I really hate Petsmart anymore. They are pretty much useless.

I use Sunseed brand. the pieces are bigger, but it is pretty much dustless. It can be pricey but I am able to get it at wholesale prices.

I've recently tried Sani chips. I love it for my neat-freak snakes, but the for the slobs, it's too messy getting in the water & they spill water onto it which turns it dark colored (I guess mold?)

I have never used the Premier, thank goodness there are plenty of pet stores around town for Kaytee.
I had wondered what Nanci meant some time ago, about smelling like a barn. I mean, I grew up playing in barns, and the faint waft of hay and cow poop (or drying tobacco) is really not too bad, to me. Although, I obviously wouldn't want my house smelling like it.

My most favorite Aspen bedding ever is Harlan TekLab Aspen Chips. It's sterilized for use in a lab setting and very absorbent. It smells good and is scoopable so it's easy to spot clean. Babies love to bury themselves in it which sometimes gives me heart failure when I can't see them right away but they seem to enjoy themselves.

I found this out the hard way. Some time ago I had bought 2 huge bags of the Premier brand. It didn't take long to start noticing what smelled like a dirty horse stall. YUCK! Even my friends and my parents asked why my house smelled like a barn.

I had no idea they sold it and I order stuff from them all the time. So I just ordered some and total price including shipping was $12.68 for the 3400 cu inches big bag. Thanks for the info on them having it. :)

Terri, where do you get TekLab?

After reading this, I looked over at my almost empty bag of aspen and wondered about the brand...it is, indeed, Premier Pet. Danny's collection is humongous, so that might be a factor, but I have this brand in six tubs and have no offensive odor at all. :shrugs:

The problem with Harlan stuff is that because it was developed for lab use it is hard to find. That said, I did some homework and found that they are located in WI and deliver to feed stores in the area. I tried to get the product for the Pet store when I was there but they would only deliver to a loading dock location which we couldn't provide. I also talked Big Scott to bring it in for me at the Wheaton show, which he did. I buy 6 bales at a time because that is all I can fit in my Outback. Lori, I could send you a bale if you want to try it?

That's too much trouble, Ter. We should, however, meet half-way for lunch or something soon since you baled on me last weekend. ::cough:: ;) Maybe you can bring me some then?

I'm going to try to drag myself down to the reptile show on Saturday since I need mice, so I'll see what I can find there.

+1 For Sani-chips

I agree, sani-chips rock! Too bad I can't find them anymore.

And yes, that Premier is absolute crap. For a while I was bu ying the wal-mart stuff, but they stopped carrying it. Next to impossible for me to find good aspen, so I switched to shredded paper. So far so good. Plus its cheap, aka free.
