Cracker - Leucistic Black Rat

Someone (not going to name names) requested pics of my pretty boy, but since he was in blue I decided to wait. He shed earlier today and I took the opportunity to do a real quick photo shoot with him.

He is probably the one snake I handle most often. Not because he's a favorite (he is) but because he has tricks. He can telekinetically remove the water from his water bowl to his substrate. So on a daily basis I am cleaning his tub, which means handling him.

He's such a cute brat, and quite tame. Has never struck, tail rattled, or anything defensive. He comes right out of the tub into my hands, I never have to chase him. You can tell I love this guy... I could talk about him for hours. Anyway, on to the pics:

Are you sure he is Black Rat and not texas? I thought Bug Eye appears in Texas more while the Blacks tend more normal.

I purchased him from Jeff Mohr, who is (I'm sure everyone will agree) honest and reputable. I had originally asked if he had LTR's but he said he only had male leucistic black rats. I like his eyeballs. They make him look goofy.

Fair enough. This i the first time I have seen this in a Black rat. but it might be something inherent in Leucistic gene in rats? I do not know.
 
Super cool snake! I just got my Leucy Texas Rat and haven't been able to shutup about him! Lol...my guy seems to have some buggy eyes, which I have heard MAY be passed on when bred, but I don't have plans on breeding him...yet:) Either way I love him to death, as you do yours I'm sure!

Nice, Jenne! What a precious little one! The eyes on him ARE adorable. Large, but not BUG-EYED like I've seen on some LTR's before.

I would have said, LTR initially too, Jimmy... But I also saw the pics that Jeff had posted... and they're quite different (at least to my memory).

Jenne... you know I'd love to see more and more pics of him as he grows. He's a handsome fella and can only grow more so! Thanks!

PS... You KNOW I'm quite envious! LOL.

Well thank you....:blush:

He was sold to me by Michael Joliff back when he used to do ratsnakes and he claimed they were from the Ohio stock from many years ago which is supposedly pure black rat stock.

Although I've hatched out a only a few males, it appears sometimes they get a little bit bigger eyes but I do have adults that do not have that at all. NONE of my females (and I've hatched out 2-3 times more of them for some reason) seem to get that eye thing so it seems specific to a few of the males. When they all hatch, both males and females eyes look normal. As the grow, a few of the males eyes may get a bit of that bubble look but not near the extent of TX ratsnakes. I'll try to get some shots of some of my keepers from around here.

By the way...he's looking terrific!
 
He's so adorable! Do you think he's swimming a lot, and splashing? What if you gave him a bigger, deeper bowl and didn't fill it to the top??

Thank you. I've tried everything you can think of, bigger bowl with only a little water, bowl with stones (to weigh it down even more) but somehow no matter what, he manages to get ALL the water out of the bowl (and not removing any stones or having the bowl upside down) and into the substrate. I can't figure it out, lol.
 
You KNOW he is just acting out to get your attention and to spend some time with you.

That is something I'm VERY familiar with... remember I work with kids! LOL.

Aww, yeah, the eyes are bulgy enough to make him look adorable without hurting his looks whatsoever, quite the opposite! :)
