DAYTONA 2011!!!

I will be donating a snake but need to figure out shipping. Talking to the expert in shipping advice (John F) because its so darn hot here (116* today). So once I figure that out, I will let you know! I think I need to buy more cold packs.... once that happens, who can I ship the snake to? Katie?

That rooms are still available? Prices of rooms?

Rooms are still available, yes. $79 for a standard (one queen bed and one pullout sleeper sofa), $89 for a one bedroom (bedroom separate from living room with queen bed and sleeper sofa), $139 for a room with two queen beds. All rooms have a full kitchen.
Also - for anyone not aware - these prices are about 1/2 the normal cost for rooms at this hotel.

And Angela - if you need to ship in advance you can ship to me. Would prefer to do it as close to the show as possible though - of course keeping in mind needing a good time period to do it for the safety of the snake.

Is there a list of corn breeders that will be there this year?

I have not checked the show website yet to see who is going to be there this year. We usually don't have a list here since that is all handled by the convention.

Are you guys going to join us for the dinner and raffle? Staying overnight? Need a room?

We are still trying to work out a few details as it falls on the worst weekend for us in august. I'll let you know an update if we do need a room. Do you know if the hotel allows dogs?

Jeff, did you decide on if you are going even if you are not vending? I'm currently stalking the FedEx facility right now

I have no idea. My new job starts a few weeks before Daytona and once I get my teaching/lab schedule I will know a lot more.

There are no vendors listed. Even if there were no cornsnake vendors at all, IMO it's still fun to go! I bet JMG will be there. Those people who bought out Rich will be there, I bet.

I agree, it is fun even without the cornsnake vendors. I honestly think the show is hurting a little this year as far as vendors go...well at least as far as vendors booking the hotel. Even though I am not a vendor, got this email from Wayne Hill about hotel rooms....here is the excerpt that makes me think the booking is not as flush as it once was:

....
The Hilton gives us a free room for our Thursday night early vendor's registration, 3 free rooms for our 3 sets of talks on Friday night, and a double room for our Saturday night auction to raise money for USARK. They also help pay for the very expensive Ocean Center for our Expo. This is based on us filling a set number of rooms, so Please help the show with your support.

I look forward to seeing you soon,
Wayne

I got that same e-mail when I asked Wayne about something. But I thought it had more to do with staying at the Hilton and supporting that than the actual show. As opposed to staying at some other hotel.

The email does have to deal with the hotel....but....there used to be a day when the Hilton was booked out VERY early by all the vendors. I used to have to reserve WAY in advance to get the hotel reservations or I missed out. Now it seems there is a decline in reservations which may inhibit some of the "free" perks. The Hilton seems to have plenty of room and from what I've been told last year and this year there is also vendor space available. I think the new FL laws combined with the tough economy for selling critters make things difficult.

Although there may not be as many cornsnake vendors this year, the show is a fun one due to the large size and the Cornsnake.com crowd and dinner are well worth the trip if you can make it. I sure hope I can this year!

I didn't even buy cornsnakes the first two years I went. I got Isabel the dragon in 2007 and Noah the BOA in 2008. And Rich's retirement sale was 2009- that was a great year! And 2010 I vended and it sucked. Vending, not the show. I don't know if I will vend this year.

I agree, Florida's laws are a bit more inhibiting to some of the vendors. Isn't there some permit hoops or something you have to jump through?

This year I have no purchase plans, just going to hang out and meet some folks in person.

You have to get a permit to sell captive-bred reptiles. It's no big deal, just hunting down the couple forms and filling them out and paying your $50. Then FWS goes around the show and expects you to have documentation proving that your animals are CB. I'm not sure how I'd handle that- maybe have their registrations with, or my laptop with Degei, or printouts from Degei. And the animals at one table are all supposed to be owned by the same person, so I had to transfer mine to Carol for the weekend!

I have no idea what the permitted species of pythons are like to sell, but I imagine those breeders already have that paperwork in order and are used to providing it.

And while I understand why Wayne wants people to stay at the Hilton due to the "perks" he is receiving, it is still cost prohibitive for a lot of people which is why I originally set up our block at the Homewood. I have never stayed at the Hilton - even when I had a better paying job - because I couldn't afford to stay there and hope to have money to enjoy the show.
I wonder who gets their free rooms? Does Wayne choose? Why even offer that information up to paying vendors? To tell them you pay for your room and we are going to use the free rooms?
And I have a really hard time believing that the Hilton helps pay for the Ocean Center - there is no financial benefit in it for them and in all my years in travel I have never heard of a hotel helping to pay for an outside facility for a group.

I am sorry for the rant - but I am frustrated with all of it right now. I am sad that the show itself has gotten smaller, I am sad that I am not seeing as much excitement and response this year just from our CS group in regards to coming to the show or for raffle donations, I am sad that I don't have as much time as previous years to really get everything jumpstarted....
I am frustrated that the show is doing the big auction for USARK again this year. I don't begrudge USARK raising money any way they can, but dang it - the show stole that idea from us. We did it first. The show used to raise money each year for different things - usually turtle/tortoise conservation of some type. But now they are stealing our thunder and are doing it for USARK two years in a row (this will be our 3rd year). And because they are doing it again it also means Robbie won't be our emcee since he has to be at the one for USARK at the Hilton - so now on top of everything else I have to figure out a new emcee (basically find someone willing to do it).....
