Do Cornsnake Bites Hurt?

Christie, my '06 "Mystery Line" lavender is currently my meanest snake. Maybe that's not a good description. She's my most nervous snake. Or maybe she's just my "hates Dean the most" snake. Whatever her problem is, I have to feed her in her tub, or she won't even eat. Even then, she'll wait many hours before braving a meal. When I handle her, she musks, strikes, thrashes-- unusual for an ~18 month old corn exceeding 200g. Not a huge corn, but not a baby either...

So I had to feed her tonight, and she was up to her usual bad behavior. My left hand is my handling hand, so she was musking it and thrashing around while I cleaned her tub and placed the mouse in it. Then I returned her to the tub and racked it.

I don't have allergies, and I'm not prone to rashes and such, so I was surprised to find a bunch of red marks on my finger long after I'd put her away (and washed my hands several times). At first I was confused, but then I noticed the distinct pattern of a snake bite. The little bleep had tagged me pretty good, and I hadn't even felt it!

So for the newbs who are scared of their 15 grammers, I hope this post gives you some confidence. ;)

You'd better put some ice on that to numb the pain.

Corn bites definetly don't hurt. I've been bitten by my adult royal python and that didn't hurt, either. The only bite I've ever received that made me wince was from a cali king that was literally chomping and would NOT let go for at least five minutes. Yet even that was okay once he let go. :shrugs:

LOL you mean your Rosy boas don't bite you at all? lol

yeah, i just laugh at my corns if they try to bite me. Heck, i just stand with amazement at my boas, when the tag me.
If you own snakes, you gotta get used to getting bitten every once in awhile.

Yeah corn snake bites do not hurt at all. I know from Rufus. Spike bit me a couple of days ago and it was the most painful snake bite I ever received. The shock of it plus the fact that I pulled away and ripped my skin, was bad. Gotta love it. :)

or maybe it's just that thick skin you developed being a mod here at cornsnakes.com
:)
That must be it. ;)

Yeah, you can feel the ol' king chew. It's like being bitten in the same spot repeatedly for a while. :)

I haven't been bitten by a rosy in a while. Both of my males are fasting for the "season", and I'm careful to keep the female's face away from me when I handle her. As you know, they're only "dangerous" when they're hungry.

I know logically that cornsnake bites don't hurt. I have been tagged enough (mainly by my young snakes) to know this - but it doesn't take away the fact that I don't want to get tagged and find myself doing anything possible (including using a hook sometimes - I know - big wimp!) to avoid a bite.

And Typically they are always hungry.

Well, going by your description of a King snakes bite (I've never handled one so I don't know), my female Ghost who laid eggs at the end of March, has turned into a King :grin01: As I was removing her from her viv at her last feeding, she tagged me really well and chomped for a good few minutes before realising I was too big to eat ;) So yeah, that one hurt a little, but just like being prickled by a small cactus, no big deal :)

PS and my Rosy hasn't bitten yet ;)

Hey, you do what you gotta do. I have a perpetually angry BCI, and she gets the dishwashing glove treatment... (and she's tiny). :)

I will have to say the pits are the worst. Even a small bull can really put a hurtin on ya! I had a wild caught 6 footer latch on to me in last summer and that joker would not let go! Every time i moved, it bit down harder..... OUCH!!!!!!!!!!

I have an allergy to their saliva or something in their mouth. I get red bumps and swelling around the area, too. That is more bothersome than the actual bite.

Yeah, my SO has said the same when my 6 foot Sonoran latched onto her. She said it hurt worse than our large kings did when the got her.
But as corns go, they are nothing. lol

That's my reaction to rosy boa bites. I'd have noticed a bite from one of them more quickly, because it would have started itching...

The only corn bite that I got that kinda hurt was one I got from my biggest female. She is about 1200 grams so no light weight :) She got the very end of my finger and pulled away so it ripped the skin abit. But still it made me more mad that she bit me rather than actually really hurting me. Otherwise I have been bitten quite abit my little ones and ones that are about 100 grams or so and its like rough sandpaper. (those are the ones who mean business, not just scared)

I've been tagged numerous times, and have been latched onto seriously just once. The worse injury was shaking off the snake that had latched on...it just caused scrapes that were worse than the teeth marks of the bite.

'Twas documented here, for any of the noobs who want to check it out.

The surprise is being bitten by a corn is more freaky than the injury itself.

regards,
jazz

I didnt pull away but she did.... I dont know where she thought she was going to take my finger LOL Was the first and only time she has ever bit me in 10+ years... maybe she liked the taste of the soap?? LOL

Do Cornsnakes Bites Hurt?

Well, I guess it all depends on where
the Cornsnake bites you at. :laugh01::sidestep:

I was tagged by our female albino burm.. Thankfully only when she was about 5 months old.. I cried. But just because I got such a fright. Ha ha..It wasnt really sore - just bled forever.. She got even more of a fright though when she realised I wasn't food and let go right away. We sold her to friends of ours who have been bitten by her too..

We also have a Suriname Boa who is a real cow - you have to make sure you protect your hand when picking her up - otherwise she'll tag you. But she is fine when you are holding her.. I have only ever picked her up twice - when her head was in another direction!

As far as corns go - none yet but my 3 are still small anyway.. My biggest is 66g..
