Does size matter?

SnakeAround

Formerly Blutengel
Hi, I own 2 young corns, sized 0,25 and 0,5 mtrs, sexe unknown. Tomorrow I'm going to get me a butter female hatchling and a 2,5 yrs old one sized 1.20 sex unknown. Together with the big one comes a viv measuring 70x40x40. I'd like to put all of the 4 corns together, but I've got some questions; is there ANY risk of fighting or even cannibalism (by the big one of course) if I do so? Should I first put look over them for some time to see if anything happens? If not, won't there be any risk left or could they just turn into a frenzy after a few days?

Further I have some thoughts about the size of the viv; if they can be put together, is it too small? Isn't it maybe even too small for only the 1.20 sized corn alone?

I tried to find anything on this, especially about putting snakes of different ages/sizes together on this site, but didn't find any...

1) Conduct a search for "cannibalism". Yes, they can and will eat each other.

2) Conduct a search for "housing snakes together". What do you think will happen if one of your new snakes is sick, is contagious, and is now in close contact with the others.

Both topics have been covered here many times before.

Anyone who tells you size doesn't matter is stroking your ego.

LOL!

Anyway~ Size matters. Check the searches CAV suggested.
Good luck!

wel, I did search for size and together, putting snakes together.... I guess I just didn't use the rigth words, but I really tries first, I'm really not up to asking questions coverde already... but tnx for your anwer!

I did'nt search for cannibalism, maybe that was my mistake, Im very sorry....

is that in centimeters? That would mean the tank is 27 in long by about 15.5 high/deep. This is roughly the same size as a 20 gal long tank which is generally considered the minimum size tank for a single adult corn.

Put in "housing corns together" in the search function. You will find more than you ever wanted to know about housing together.

What a great suggestion! Why didn't I think of that???

hey, no sarcasm on my tread please... :twoguns: I can't help choosing just the wrong words. :bounce: I did find a lot of treads with those words, I have to admit

You dont ever have to appologize for questions, especially when it comes to the lives of your snakes. You tried to search, but just didnt know which key words to hit those threads. There's no foul in that. You just needed a point in the right direction, that's all. I'm just glad you asked before tossing the larger one in there with the little ones and realizing way too late that it's not a smart idea.

and I hope, after reading through the threads...you made a responsible, educated decision...

All three should be housed seperately to prevent any and all issues!

well, I was not really sorry, I put on some little sarcasm myself *lol*

I didn't buy the big one after all, see my thread at the photogallery, because I couldn't get my boyfriend to accept a second viv... and I did buy a fourth little one I fell in love with at a trade fair. I've asked lots of people there about this matter, and they told me not too woory about the little ones together for some time if only kept as a hobby, like mine (for now). I'll get 2 separate bigger vivs like at the end of this year I think, because I was advised to put no more then 2 (semi) adults in one viv. I also need the time to convince my boyfriend 2 vivs won't be too much, I don't expect to be able to talk him into 4 vivs.... for me this was the best solution possible... I wouldn't be satisfied with 2 corns only, I like more patterns and colors then that, I;d even like to have a gre and/or black motley, but don't knwo how to solve the housing/boyfriend 'problem', any advice mabey?

Well despite what you were told, it's not a good idea to house any two snakes together, nevermind more than two.

If you want advice about what to do---build a rack system. Do a search for 'rack systems' and you'll see many threads explaining exactly what was done and how to make one.

I can keep 18 sub adults to hatchlings in the space that perhaps 5 10 gallon tanks would fill up.

well, I know about all the con's and don't mean to start a discussion about all this again, but tnx for your advice. Because I'm a hobbyist who wants to enjoy the sigth of a nice looking glass viv so I can observe the animals, I don't want to build a rack. I don't plan to bred corns in the near future too. Have to wait until the little ones grow up if I want to....

Nope, you just have to wait a few months till the ones you have housed together mate before they are ready. Are you ready to house 10+ hatchlings? You might have some free space though because the females that where to young to mate could die.

Sorry, but if a person can't provide the housing for them, they shouldn't have them.

I thought they would only mate after hibernation.... maybe I should at least split the sexes very soon.... mmmm

Nope...don't have to be brumated. My female laid 14 eggs (9 slugs but that was due to heat I believe) after no brumation and my dad's laid 9 fertile eggs with an accidental mating (no brumation there either). Separate. Soon.

It's very simple to BUILD a nice display unit for multiple animals. Right now I'm building four to keep my dragons and 16 of my favorite adult corns for display in my house. Top section measures 48"L x 24"D x 32"H; bottom four sections are 24"L x 24"D x 24"H. Each piece holds 5 reptiles.

For the SAFETY of your corns (and to avoid your own disappointment), please house separately! Just because a few say it's ok and/or they've never had a problem...doesn't mean you or they won't.

Wanted to add the picture...To show you how big these things are...Once at least one of them is done, I'll be posting them. :)
