Eggs! And Questions :-)

Well, Niamh has presented us with 7 pretty white eggs:

Now what? They are big, white beauties, and she's been curled up around them all weekend. So what now? Shall I remove the eggs even though she's still in the box and start the incubation process in case any of them are fertile (we haven't had her with a male, but she laid eggs for her previous owner earlier this year), or should I leave them in there with her until she comes out of her own free will?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :). Thanks!

While I'm at it, and if Beckers and/or Stephen see this thread, IF any of these eggs are fertile, and if any hatch, what can I expect them to look like? If I recall, the male looked just like Niamh. Would that mean hatchlings would look like Niamh? If so, I'm keeping them all :).

So she double clutched off an earlier breeding with the previous owner? There is a good chance they might be good so take them (she may shove a bit but shouldn't strike) and incubate. At the very least you will get some practice doing the incubating process. I'm not entirely what kind of stripe she is but she is lovely, if the father is the same unless they both have hets then yes the babies will look like them.

When removing her, hold her down and slowly unravel her. Get the eggs to a nice warm incubator or warm room, look up all you can egg care......Congrats

I did not have to hold down Brass :shrugs: I just touched her and she moved from the eggs. But as each snake is different you may need to restrain yours as you remove the eggs. Do keep us posted on how they do!

Thanks guys. The help and advice is appreciated :). I'll have Z remove them when he gets home from work and we'll start the incubation process!

Yes, she double clutched.

Niamh is a Sunglow Stripe. The male looks like he's probably one, too, if I remember the pix correctly. I don't know that for sure, though, nor do I have any idea of either snake's hets, if any. I guess we'll see when/if any eggs hatch!

Nanci--only if I'm lucky :).

Well, I see one or two of those eggs that might be fertile. But there are some slugs there too. Just to be on the safe side, incubate them all. You will know in time which ones are good and which ones aren't.

The male that was bred to her was a Fire stripe (amel bloodred stripe) and she is an Amel stripe. All the babies will be amel stripes het bloodred. They will be good looking adults one day.

Thanks for the info, Becky. MUCH appreciated!

Just out of curiosity, how can you tell by looking at Z's rather blurry photo which eggs are slugs and which may have the potential to be fertile? They all look pretty much the same to my untrained eyes :).

The easiest way to explain it would be if the eggs look chalky and stick to other eggs then they are most likely good. The ones that look yellowish and slick with the crease in the sides are most likely slugs.

Well, here is an updated photo of the eggs, now in their moist box. I'm hoping at least the big, plump one in the middle is a good egg, and that it will hatch me out a new little baby :). I don't know about any of the others, although I'm willing to bed those deformed, tiny eggs on the left are definitely duds. All of the others in the middle are stuck together, which is why they're not neatly separated. Educated guesses as to good eggs welcome!

In the clump, Maybe 2... The bottom one and the one with the rusty stain on it, kinda catty corner from the bottom one.... The others appear to be slugs, but I would incubate the clump for sure...

Well, she's done laying, I think. After we removed the eggs, we took away the lay box as she'd been curled up in it for days. Poor girl seemed to be rather stiff once she was out! LOL! Anyway, she ate this morning for the first time in something like a month! Just need to "fatten her up" a bit--she looks rather skinny. Now I'll just hope there is a good egg or two in that clutch and that we can successfully hatch it/them :).

That's good that she ate. She'll start gaining her weight back pretty fast. You could put the laybox back in her cage to help her with her upcoming shed. Which should be in about 10 days give or take.

I see maybe two that might be good. But you might as well do them all until you can be 100% sure. Do keep us updated on them, it would be really neat for you to get one or two babies out of it!

Ok, will do. Good advice. I wish I had thought of it myself :).

Tavia, if anything hatches, you can be sure I'll be shouting it from the rooftops! LOL! AND, I have a good DSLR, so you might get to see way more photos than anyone could possibly want to see, too! hehehehe

wow

Sorry I didnt see this thread! I think it was right around the time I shattered my wrist. Did any of the eggs end up hatching? Hope you got at least one baby
