The Mexican fire leg at my local herp store. Everytime I go in I find myself staring at this spider. It is the prettiest spider I have ever seen. Just gorgeous. I've been looking at spiders for months, maybe a year now, but I've never seen one that begs me to purchase it like this one does.

At this point it is about 1/2 dollar sized, feeding on live medium-sized crickets. I know that they are more aggressive than a rose hair, and that they tend towards kicking hairs... but will this be an issue if it's going to be a "hands-off" pet??

This is your chance to talk me out of this one... cuz man that fellow is calling me big time!
 
I say get it if you don't mind having to keep insects around. You can use gloves for cage cleaning to tranport it their bites do hurt when they get bigger though! Maybe I'm a big old baby but my neighbors got me between two fingers and my eyes watered, lol

A Mexican fire leg is a great first tarantula, very beautiful and easy to care for. Mine isn't aggressive but she is a hair kicker from hell. If you don't plan on holding her then it won't be an issue, you just want to wear rubber glover if you ever have to change the substrate out since there will be hairs in it.

Get it!! We have one and yes, it flicks alot, but we never handle it and it simply stays out of our way when we're working in the viv. I haven't found it an aggressive species. Its name is Tarantulasaurus Rex. LOL Cobalt blues on the other hand....
 
I'm with the others... don't even fight it. Just get the beauty and be done with it! LOL.

They're an AWESOME display Tarantula and you'll have people staring at it the whole time you're at your house. LOL.

Getting rid of mine was one of the toughest things I ever did... but I know she's in a home that appreciates her more than my home did. LOL.

Sorry it took me so long to respond dear. Of course you should buy it! While boehmei are a bit more defensive than other Brachypelma species, this doesn't mean that they are necessarily aggressive. I handle mine quite regularly without incident. Yes they kick hairs, but you will be hard pressed to find a new world species that doesn't.

Want my serious advice? Go for it... absolutely go for it. They may not be as docile as roseas, but they are definitely up there with them. No matter how docile though, tarantulas for the most part are designed to be hands off. Many can be handled, but they can't be "tamed" in the manner that we are accustomed to (as with our reptiles). I guarantee that you will not regret buying it. They are absolutely fascinating creatures. Watching it grow will definitely help smother any squeamishness, and you may one day decide to hold her. Should the worse happen and you get bit, it will feel like nothing more than a bee sting. I would rather get bit by any of my boehmei than by some of my snakes.

This site not only furthers my Corn addiction, but somehow manages to fuel my Tarantula addiction as well!

If your T is a display animal only (which I think is perfectly fine) then you shouldn't have a problem with the barb flicking. Get an over sized tweezers for cleaning and you should be set!

I apologize that this isn't of the particular genus you're interested in, but this is the first molt video I ever saw and I've always been in awe of it. If this isn't enough to [*cough not] convince you I don't know what is!

I think Tarantulas are amazing creatures who are very underrated and feared simply out of lack of understanding and unwillingness to unknown experiences. If you're not convinced yet you should at least pick up this alluring invert to wake up your hippocampus (part of the brain that reacts to novelty/ new experiences).
