I bought a exo-terra medium rain forest heat pad, and i dont think it works. I've had it plugged in for 1/2 an hour and it hasnt changed in temperature. Is it dud.
 
The rainforest ones don't put off much heat. Put the temp sensor directly on the glass above it. I usually put a hide directly over it and then measure the temp in the hide. Even then, it shouldn't get much above 75 degrees. if you have a lot of substrate over it, you won't notice a change at all. It definitely doesn't radiate heat very well at all.
 
i just got a corn snake 2-3 hours ago i have an exo-terra heat pad but when i pick him/her up he/she is cold is that right and the substrate is hardly even warm

A snake's body temp is going to be colder than yours, so it will feel cool to you. Simple matter of physics. And the substrate being "hardly warm" may even be too warm for the snake. Best bet is to monitor the temp on the glass above the UTH with a digital thermometer and regulate the temp with a rheostat or thermostat.

I have the same one, and I moniter it with a digital thermometer. If I don't keep an eye on it, it will creep up to like 107F!!
Our new petstore opened up yesterday, so I'm stopping by to get some other kind of UTH!
But the ambient temp in my house is like 84F ( WAYY to hot for me!) so I don't usually plug it in!
 
I have the same heat pad, on hot days it heats up well over 90, on average days of about 70 degrees, it raises to about 85 degrees. So it really depends on what your house temp is.
 
Sorry for the double post, but I also wanted to add that the first time I plugged it in it took like 3 hours to heat up a couple degrees.

A UTH by itself, unregulated, is going to do this.

This is why all UTH's, no matter the brand, need to be controlled by a rheostat or thermostat.

Almost all UTH's will skyrocket like that. That's why they need to be on a rheostat or thermostat. Even if your ambient temp is warm, belly heat from a UTH is beneficial to a snake's digestion.
 
George, have you taken the temp of the UTH with a thermometer? If it doesn't work, I'd take it back, and I, myself would get the desert pad and use it with a thermostat. It gets too hot to use without a thermostat.
 
I use the desert pad from exo-terra with a thermostat and have no issues. The temperature hovers around 85 on top of the paper towel. It will only turn on at night due to the season.

Georgia, That is. and the guy at the pet store said i can return it anytime i wish to exchange it for a rheostat + another UTH.
