Eyeless Bloodred het Hypo, Lavender

I hope the little bugger makes it too! Strange pics!!! No matter what happens keep her (freeze her if she dies...) I want to see her in person.

Always something strange afoot when breeding... look at the human race! We have our share of abnormalities and we tend to keep them ticking... now don't get all riled up... I am not saying snakes and humans are = to one another... just a comparison to efforts and thoughts. This lil one would NEVER be considered for breeding... just a pet or strange display snake (like the two headed monsters) LoL.

cheers all!

I'm new here! I was referred to this forum by a member o0f the forum at thamnophis.com. I too have a (I won't live this down! LOL!) one-eyed snake!

First of all, I really hope your bloodred makes it!

I have a WC Oregon Garter Snake (Thamnophis atratus hydrophilus) I caught last September (2007) as a neonate. I do not know if there is any in-breeding going on in the wild populations where I caught "Lefty", but the mutation is very similar to what I am seeing here. Lefty has been doing fine, eating a variety of prey (tadpoles, minnows, and trout pieces); he sheds regularly and is growing like a weed (I believe garters have higher metabolisms than corns; he's always hungry.... Pacific Aquatic Garters are little piggies!). Lefty engages in the natural tongue-luring behaviors typical of the aquatics, and the lack of an eye only seems to interfere with spotting a predator on that side...

I would like to know if anyone has come across any other similar defects in species other than corns and garters...

Cool. Lefty is awesome! I'm glad he's doing so well. It gives us just a bit more hope for the little blood red from the original post. :)

When it comes to a one-eyed snake, I'm a lot more dubious that there's an underlying mutation than a no-eyed snake; basically the eye forms where two layers of tissue touch during development. If they don't touch, no eye! It seems possible that some kind of environmental problem or congenital issue could keep one eye from forming; but if both eyes don't form, then it seems more likely there's something genetic than this same rare event happening twice. The other possibility is that it IS a mutation, but that this mutation is present only in certain cells (the ones around the missing eye) and thus it it is unlikely to be present in the gametes.
Of course, only breeding trials can say! ... although that might not be the kind of thing one wants to breed. :p

I guess I'm the only one, but I do not see the charm in an eyeless hatchling..

I just see charm in snakes, eyes don't have much to do with it. I can see culling an animal that's hurt or starving, but I wouldn't cull one just cause it's blind. I wouldn't ever breed it, but I have lots of snakes that won't breed.

Dig the garter by the way!

Well the little guy shed yesterday without a problem. I took him out to hold him and he was not as calm as he had been before. I touched his neck and he opened his mouth as a warning but didn't bite. After a few minutes of holding him I put him back in his deli cup and offered him a live pinkie. At first he wasn't the least bit interested but after about 10 mins he started checking out the pinkie. I let him be for a few hours and then pulled the pinkie out as he was showing no interest at this point. I'll try frozen thawed and then some various non feeder tricks to see if he'll take a meal.

aww, poor little guy. but I guess he wouldnt miss what he's never known, so it seems normal to him. *shrugs*

he's cute though, I would so buy him... :D

:( No... it hasn't eaten. I keep trying new stuff though because he shows interest but just won't go for it.

Great news!!! He ate! I've been trying different stuff and nothing has worked yet. Tonight I was feeding all the hatchlings and figured I'd just throw in a FT again to see if he would take it. I checked him 10 mins later and the pinkie was gone. His big belly was my excitement for the night. :)
