Faolan died, head stuck in plastic tub hole

Hi everyone, I haven't posted here in quite some time, although I do pop in occasionally to read. Unfortunately I am posting today because I found my little hypo lavender, Faolan, dead this morning, and I just want to warn anyone else so the same thing doesn't happen to them.

I use an economy Animal Plastics rack with the 32QT #1755 Sterilite Tubs. I just moved this weekend and I thought it would be a good time to upgrade two of my littler snakes from the shoebox size (I forget the # on those) to the 32 quarts. I haven't weighed them in awhile, but the little snakes are nearing 1 year old and are quite long although still somewhat slender.

Faolan got his head stuck, with his nose poking out one of the holes left from taking out the handles. On the shoebox sized bins, I had plugged these holes manually before putting them in because I read the baby snakes could escape. I never thought to plug the bigger bins, because I knew the snakes couldn't fit through. My advice: if your snake isn't completely fully grown - plug them! I never would've guessed in a thousand years his head could get stuck that way.. it almost didn't seem possible. With his nose poking through the hole, he was able to slide the rest of his head into the little space and just couldn't back out again. What an awful, terrible way to die. I am completely wracked with guilt knowing how he must have struggled.

It must've happened sometimes yesterday or last night, I have just been changing their water every other day since I moved on Sunday to let them settle in. Everyone was fine on Tuesday. I feel like a terrible person. He was so beautiful, and feisty, like Chai. He would always rattle his tail when it was dinner time or after eating. He was getting so big, and he had the pinkest, rosiest cheeks.

I apologize for the long post. If I can help just one other person, and snake, not to go through this, it's worth it.

You poor thing, that's a horrible thing to find. At least you may save someone else's snake by posting this though.

I am so sorry for you loss. I use those tubs and I know I didn't remove the handles because I was afraid of something like that. Again I am so terribly sorry.

I'm so sorry. They really can try to squish through the most ridiculously small spaces. I have one which is permanently disfigured after attempting to squeeze between sliding glass doors. I feel guilty every time I look at him, so I have enormous sympathy for you.

Poor thing, I know you must be heartbroken.

I lost a boa much the same way earlier this year. It really sucks, but you have to not beat yourself up over it. Do what you can to keep the others safe and cherish the time you did have together.

Sorry to hear of your loss!

I own the very same rack system...And I know the holes you speak of. Working on plugging them as soon as i post this message.

Again, Truly sorry to hear of your loss.
