Finally we found one!

I may need snake rehab.
We have been searching for a nice black rat snake since last year when we finally moved out of the city and next to the woods, and couldn't find one to save our lives. But today was a success! My husband found this beauty while mowing the lawn. He was a bit aggressive, tagged my husband twice, but he settled down pretty quickly. The worst part was the musking...glad it was my husband and not me :D

My husband holding him.

Me holding him. I was using the Steve Irwin technique.

Cool find! I haven't seen a big black rat since moving to Mississippi. We had some humongous ones in Indiana, though.

Yep, he was a big boy. I really wanted to get a weight on him I would guess him to be 1500g or so but I didn't think of it till the last minute and we were really starting to piss him off. I didn't want to stress him out anymore. If I had an extra 55 gallon I would have kept him just for a week or so to watch him and see if he would eat for us, just for observation. Alas, he was just too big for a 20 gallon, I'm sure its better we just left him alone.

ooh, that was a big guy! I haven't seen one since I moved into town a couple years ago :( but I've told my mom that if she sees any hatchlings she has to wrangle one for me! They're legal to have here but not legal to buy.
I remember our ding dong dogs getting into a new clutch when I was little; wish I would have kept one!

We have blacksnakes around here but every time I encounter one, they seem pretty grumpy. One breaks into our house every year and I have to wrangle him back outside. He's not too appreciative of the favor I'm doing him. We also found one in the engine of the car and no, the car wasn't cold when we discovered this. ( He kinda popped out on my side of the windshield as we were going to Wal-Mart and made me squeak! ) Don't know why he objected to being thrown in a country ditch!

I don't dare pick up black rat snakes, they're ferocious here. Maybe it's the heat makes 'em ornery. They sure are pretty though.

I see you're in near the same area that I grew up in. I lived in the Greenville
area (around Simpsonville) most of my life, until moving to Columbia in '02.
Used to find Big Black snakes all over the place up there. Don't remember
them being really aggressive though, except for the bigger ones, and
usually in the early spring (around mating time). I actually caught one down
here around a marshy area just outside the city last year. It was in the
early fall, and I rolled over the top of it in my car (without hitting it), and
stopped after I passed over it. I see tons of Black Racers and Copperheads
around that area, but this was the first Black Snake I've seen since moving
here. It didn't move at all even when I got my hook under it and I thought
it was dead until I started lifting it, and it slithered off the hook. I got under
it a second time and got it far enough off the ground and finally got holf of
it's tail. After I picked it up it settled down again and got very calm. It was
just under 2 feet long and still had some of the Juvenile patterns (lightly)
but the stitching around the mouth was REALLY NICE ! . . .reached for my
cell phone to get a picture of it and realized I didn't have it on me. Held onto
it for a little while and resisted the urge to take it home, and set it off in the
grass on the side of the road. It made a Bee Line for some old dead branches
and got under them quickly.

Cool find, that guy was huge! Not surprised your husband got bit, they are a seriously chompy snake. :D
