First snake! Overweight?

Hey, I got this little guy (no idea if it's actually a guy) the end of August, he was born the middle of July. I have been feeding him every five days since I got him, and he is up to fuzzies now. Is that taper at his tail normal? What about that slight ridge going down the side of his body? I have no idea how much he weighs, but he is like, 20-22 inches long (kinda hard to tell)

omg yes your snake is being over fed

move him back down to pinkys once every 7 days till that irregular shape is gone ASAP

I usually change to 6 or 7 day feedings on fuzzies, otherwise you can run the risk of getting fatty deposits ('hips') by over-feeding.

He looks fine to me. Looks like fuzzies are fine. That is a well-grown 2008! I feed everyone every five days up till they are 250-300 grams, no matter what they are eating. I don't have any fat snakes. Are you sure he's a male? That taper at the tail looks a lot like what it looks like when a snake has a big poop ready to go. Watch out!!

I was thinking the same thing. Doesn't appear to be overweight. Just monitor it, and you really shouldn't have any problems if you watch for the "hips".

Does he not have 'hips' ? Is it not the taper? Do you question whether or not it is a male?, do female corn snakes usually grow faster and/or larger than males? We only assumed it was a male... It's father has a 'diamond' shaped spot on his head, and his mother has a heart shaped spot. Half of the babies(?) had a diamond and half had a heart... No idea if that is anywhere near accurate, but it seemed like an interesting observation. He seems pretty comfortable with fuzzies... They are just a hair bigger than the thick of his body, I may add a few days to his feeding cycle though.

He doesn't look bad to me... but a photo from overhead of the whole snake often helps better than what you've posted so far.

That is not hips. Hips bulge out laterally (to the sides) and look (I'm sorry all snakes with hips) really gross. Once you see it, you would know. Plus, I've only seen adults with hips, not juvenile snakes. Your snake is bulging down. Looks like poo ready to go, to me. Plus your guy's spine is visible, in a good way, and he looks like he has strong, defined muscles.

Do you know the last time your snake has gone poo? Because, my snake poo's regularly every 4 days, and you might not be giving it enough time for letting it uh, releive himself. I would say fill up your tub or sink and have him swim around in it, make sure the water is not too hot, and he'll swim around and probably have a mighty poo :)

Holy cow! Thank you guys... That was the trick. His poop must've been 2 1/2 inches long. There is no more taper. He didn't really seem to like the water though, is that weird. I never see him laying in his water dish either. He pooped pretty quickly after putting him in the tub, so I drained it all out and put some more water in and all he wanted to do was get out. I am going to have to do that more often.

Just do the tub thing when he doesnt poop in about 2 weeks +. Do you have any updated pics? I'm sure he looks slimmer now :p

Yes, I find it amusing how much better I feel after HE pooped...

I dont think he is overweight, but you should feed him every 7 days now. And it is good that he is not solking in his water bowl unless he is going to shed. When they do it usualy points to mites or the humidity not being high enough in the enclosure

:) I was with Nanci and Robbie (I actually posted a similar thread to yours awhile back with the same results- my lil one just had to go!)

I'm glad that the mystery was solved- but I would agree with the others. When feeding pinks, I feed every 5 days, but with fuzzies I feed every 7 days.

Also... Welcome to the forums!!

I'm sorry but this thread really made me giggle! I just pictured this constipated snake wriggling around in the water, lol.

Your corn is absolutely gorgeous! Very healthy looking for an '08! It is generally better for him to eat more than less. He can't starve to death if he has an appetite! ;)

You're doing good!
Welcome to the site.

Please don't jump in when you don't know what you are talking about, listen to all these other people who know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is real hard if not impossible to over feed a hatchling or even a yearling with out it regurging.

Be mindful of its tail. If you notice it lifting its tail. It is usually gonna take a dump. If i notice mine is full like that. I usually don't handle them too long before i put them away.. I don't like getting poo'd on. :angry01: Other wise it looks good. I usually feed mine on a 7 day schedule.
