First time breeding female sunglow motley and male ghost motley

Ok another question. I didn't time the sheds right and my female just shed but it's only been a week since they first tied together. I didn't brumate either. So can I expect eggs to be layed after the next shed? I went ahead and fed her today. Should I wait till her next shed to put a lay box in or should I put it in 3 weeks after the first copulation? Which would be in about two more weeks.

It wouldn't hurt to put a lay box in now. I put mine in nice and early for my girl, and she's been in it a lot, even before her prelay shed.
 
I don't want to put it in too early and it to get soiled and allow bacteria or fungus to take a hold on the eggs.

I've never had problems with mold in orchid moss, even when it is months old. And it is very, very rare for a female to poop in the lay box..it's a much greater risk to not provide a box and have her lay the clutch out in the aspen, or in the water bowl, or be stressed about not finding a suitable place to lay. I put the box in with the female the moment I stop pairing her.

Have you done a test pairing after her shed, just to check to see if she is still receptive?
 
No they were just together yesterday and I fed them both afterwards and then I saw the shed this morning.

It has been exactly one week since their first time together. My husband just told me he knew she was blue the week before if I had known that I would've waited for her to shed before putting them together.

So I was going to wait till Sunday to put them together again that will be a full two days after they've been fed.

Well Nanci I paired them this morning and she was receptive immediately. Thems some horny snakes let me tell you... lol. They've gotten right to business each time. That was the fourth paring.

Yay!! Everyone here is REALLY in the mood too, now. When I put in the lay box, (which is 9" round) I remove the big water bowl and put in a very small one. One the snake cannot get into. I leave as many of her regular hides as will still fit.

I'd put the lay box in the day you stop pairing them. 4-6 breedings should be plenty. She will probably shed before she lays, but you sure can't count on it.

You _may_ be able to found egg bumps already. If not, in a couple weeks.

If you haven't decided on incubation media yet, you still have time to order a bag of HatchRite. OR they might have it at Repticon Orlando next weekend.

Organic lettuce containers make great egg boxes. (Not lay boxes- way too small!!)
 
I already took out the big water dish and put a small one in their. Does the lay box need to be round?


Unfortunately I work next weekend. I should've requested a day off for repticon I usually do if it falls on a weekend I work.

ok this is a silly question but does the lay box need to be round? I couldn't find a round container that seemed big enough so I have a shoe box sized sterilite/Rubbermaid tub.

It doesn't have to be round. I'm using a shoe box sized container as well. Just make sure to make a hole in the lid that is plenty big enough for her to get in and out. I used a soldering gun to melt a hole in mine so the edges aren't sharp at all.
 
The HatchRite shouldn't be kept until next year, BTW, unless you can vacuum seal it. The proper moisture is critical.
 
if you are using vermiculite you add the moisture yourself right? so long as you measure humidity?

This is why I prefer sphagnum moss; it's so much easier to deal with. Soak moss, wring it out until no more water drips, fluff it up, surround eggs with it in lay box. I have to re-do it once during incubation, about halfway through.
 
well I had intended to use wrung out sphagnum moss lightly on top of the eggs and had intended to use vermiculite. However the harchrite is ordered and on its way and I want to ensure the best outcome especially since this is my first time. I still think ill do the sphagnum moss lightly over top.

nanci, I put them together again today and they locked up again pretty quick. its been two weeks since their first lock and that was their 5th time. Should I do it again in a couple days?

She is in the blue! I can't tell if she has eggs or not although she never refused I stopped pairing them after the 6th time.
