flexwatt?

Serpent2007

No snakes in ROI eh?
hi everyone was thinkin of using this for my rack..any good or would other devices be better......Thanks
Noel

flexxwatt is one of the best things to use....its easly to install and don't take any room up....I don't have the link now but there is a thread that has it step by step how to install it...ill try to find it and post it for you

I swear by FlexWatt. I live in the northeast so a stronger heat source is used to produce the ambient temps I need in our racks. Some people use "heat rope" and I have heard good things about it but for me it is definitely FlexWatt.

I have Flexwatt in Adult Rack and my Neo Racks there is also 7' of 11" flex watt in my Incubator I love it! check out Bigappleherp.com for Flex watt. :)

Flexwatt has proven to be the best bang-for-your-buck when it comes to heating. Heat tape would have cost me many times over what flexwatt did. Check the rack construction link in my sig to see how I have it wired up.

I've give a thumbs up for Flexwatt, too. I'm using it in three of my enclosures currently and I love it.

Excellent stuff and it's very affordable.

I gave the heat rope a try on my latest racks. So far it's working great! However, I would probably caution people against it who live in very cold climates and need a bigger "boost" in temperature. It doesn't seem to heat as fast or as strong as flexwatt. But flexwatt is also great and is the best bang for the buck imo.

What size Flex watt should I use?

I’m using a self build reptile cage for my two corn snakes. The front and sides are about 95% acrylic (about 5% 3/8” wood) the back, bottom and top is 3/8” wood. The cage is 48” long, 18” wide and 24” high. In the middle of the cage is an acrylic divider, to keep the two snakes apart. I’ve been using two 50 watt Infrared Heat Lamp in the summer and two 75 watts Infrared Heat Lamp in the winter (one on each side located in the top of the cage.
My snakes are thriving and warm, however the Infrared Heat Lamp are not only expensive they only last a few months. After reading dozen and dozen of post I decided to cut a rectangular hold in the floor of my cage and replace it with acrylic, then I want to add Flex watt with a Herpstat Proportional Thermostat.

Based on the above information, I have TWO QUESTION?

What size Flex watt should I use? :shrugs:
1. 17" is 10 watts per foot.
2. 11" is 20 watts per foot.
3. 4" is 8 watts per foot.
4. 3" is 10 watts per foot.

One 11" piece for each side should be adequate.

Is 3/8" wood going to be strong enough for a cage that size? I would be worried about bowing, especially on the top. For a 48" cage, I'd use at least 3/4".

My guest was not an educated guest just a guest.

Thanks,

That sounds good to me. I was thinking of three pieces of the 11", but my guest was not an educated guest just a guest. That would result in almost half of each cage floor. Thanks again for your recommendation.

I do have 1" X 3" wood support on both the top and bottom of the cage. Plus my sides are 1 1/4" wood frames with the acrylic, in the middle.

What are your cage dimensions?

I put flexwatt (4" wide) in my viv that I'm making ... I had good recommendations to use it.

What is your temperature in your cage and what are your cage dimensions?
If I may ask.

How do you deside which is the better of the two?

Is there a formular to determine when one should use 7" or 11" or 4"? :shrugs:

I live in Denver, CO
I want to do this right the first time since I will have to remodel me cage to make this Flex Watt work.

Thanks

I'll try to supply you with another location later this week-end if not tonight.

"Am in Canada and its impossible to find here. As well as not being approved for any use here as well." NOTE: the above is a direct quote from another user. Canada is not the only country that feels that way. Even local US suppliers caution the use of this product. The key is - be careful to follow direction when applying it your self.

"WARNING! :flames: Because this is a product that you manufacture yourself, there is no implied warranty and you incur all liability for it. Keep tape under 95 degrees! Use common sense when using this or any other electrical heat element. This product is intended for indoor use."

Okeetee Corn Snakes,

The best place I've found to buy it is reptilebasics.com The guy or guys that run that website are awesome. They'll tell you exactly what you need and if you put how you want it set up in the comments they'll go ahead and take care of it for you so when it shows up all you have to do is attach it where you want it and go.

Wishing you success.

Here's something else I learned about flex watt that anyone new to it might do well to know.
On my viv, I have a top and bottom unit.. I use the 11" flexwatt on both. Well I thought at one point that 11" flexwatt = 11" flexwatt regardless of where I bought it, so I set up the top unit with a helix thermostat and 11" from reptilebasics.com. Later when I bought a second snake, I picked up 1' of 11" from beanfarm, figuring I could run it on the same thermostat. The result was that when one viv was warm enough the other was too cool. And when the second was warm enough, the first was too hot. Ok, so they come in different wattages.
I know this is obvious for people who are familiar with the product, but someone just starting with it might want to know that up front.. :grin01:
