Yes. I was also told by a friend that a simple barrel change will convert a 33 to a 27 and vice versa.

That is correct. I have converted several of my guns from .40S&W to .357Sig in that manner. One other benefit of the .357Sig cartridge is that it tends to make feeding that necked down cartridge into a chamber VERY reliable. So feeding jams are really rather rare in a gun that shoots this caliber.

I may invest in the barrel just to have the option to shoot another caliber. Trying to decide on a holster now. I am considering the MTAC or similar.

I picked up 500 rounds of 180gr FMJ for practice ammo to get used to the gun. Will probably look at 165gr JHP defense rounds to carry. The Federal hydra-shok ammo is pricey though at over $1 a round ($20.49 for 20 round box).
 
I've tended to be partial to the Speer Gold Dot design myself...
