For those who know about guns...

Time is not on my side. I leave on Friday. Guess its something I will look into once I get into CA. Unfortunately, I will be in SoCal and it definitely looks to be more restrictive there. Perhaps just some mace will suffice. I also always carry a small blade while I travel. Its better than nothing!

Thanks for all the help everyone!! I wonder what hunters and truckers do. You know they cross state lines with guns. I doubt all of them have permits for every state they cross over too.

All gun laws do is keep the lawful from being able to protect themselves! Grr. But I do understand the need for some restrictions.

I wonder what hunters and truckers do.

A fellow trucker friend broke down in a bad area of DC and had a few guys casing his truck while he was waiting for a repair truck. He called the police, who arrived 30 minutes later, right about the time these guys were making their move. While they took off the policeman asked (no lie) "Why are you down in this neighborhood without a gun?"

I don't carry a gun, but I've done deliveries in some really dicey areas that have made me wish I did. I used to keep a field hockey stick behind the seat, which proved a real good defensive weapon early one morning in a cruddy section of Hollywood MD ;)

DYK Nanci, I cant watch the video because my parents internet is that slow! But it looks nifty. Will have to look it up!

Just remember that ANY gun is better than NO gun at all. While everyone would like to have a hand cannon with them when they REALLY, REALLY need it, quite often people will buy the biggest meanest handgun they can find, and then discover that it's darn uncomfortable and inconvenient to lug it around all of the time. So quite often they just wind up leaving it at home.

Although some people will sneer at the idea of a .22 as a self defense carry weapon, I've seen what a lowly .22 can do. Quite frankly, if someone is pointing a .22 at me, I'm going frozen. Getting shot with a .22 will just ruin anyone's day.

Most people who carry never even draw their weapons. If you end up in the situation where you have to, I highly doubt that someone is going to eyeball your gun enough to see/know what caliber it fires. Hell, as an inexpensive rail mounted laser on it. That should be enough to send someone running.

Good thread. Too bad our politicians have decided the constitution and the second amendment are something to be scorned and infringed upon. Good luck dealing with states like Kalifornia and Illinois.

Colt .45 Combat Commander Love that gun! But a .22 will kill em just as well. The problems with the .22's are the little cheap ones dont shoot where you aim em lol.

If you are stopped in Illinois with a gun in the passenger compartment you will be arrested. The laws are very restrictive here. Get pepper spray it works very well on most everyone and you dont have to worry about getting sued for shooting someone.

Pepper spray is pretty nasty stuff. So if you DO use it on someone else, make darn sure that you don't get yourself into some overspray or the wind is blowing the wrong way. You could find yourself blinded standing next to someone else who is blinded AND also pissed at you for squirting them with that stuff....

Also note, that not all types, brands, and methods of delivery of pepper spray are created equal. Some will work better than others for the intended application.

AND, there are restrictions in some states concerning pepper spray as well that you will need to be aware of. -> http://www.pepperspraylaws.com/

Although a .22 will do damage, it will not stop someone unless it hits a vital area that kills you immediately. A lot of people who are confronted with the possibility of shooting someone defensively are facing someone on drugs or alcohol or both....those types are not likely to stop at the sight of a gun and will keep coming if shot. I would not use anything smaller than a .380 for defense and that is loaded with hollow points for maximum damage. I've seen what many types of gun shot injuries look like working at a trauma center and most .22 shots end up elsewhere in the body but the person is still talking and in many cases walking around. Of course, like Rich says....any firearm is better than no firearm, but I don't keep a .22 around for home defense. That's a target plinker at my house. 9mm, .45, .380 or 12 ga. is my caliber of choice either on my person or home defense. The first three would have hollow point ammo as well. I don't want the sucker getting up and walking away to do it again anytime soon!

Wow, thanks everyone! Nanci, I finally was able to watch the videos and those sounds great! Carol, let me know if you are able to clearance those. I would be interested!

I prefer the older black Guardian Angel model- it's just more comfortable to hold and has a clip so it will stay where you put it. The red Pepper Blaster is the newer model. I am not sure how many places will still carry the GA. I checked Midway USA and they don't.

I am assuming the above is your opinion. I would argue that many drunk and high people would run if a gun was drawn...especially if they did not have a gun of their own.

That said, I, too think a .22 is a little small but it may be better than nothing in many situations. I personally don't carry anything less than .380....often my 45 is within reach...especially if I am going in the backwoods looking for herps.

Actually the gun I carry is a Glock model 33. I tend to have a preference for any gun that shots the .357Sig cartridge... At the time, this was the smallest, lightest package I could find that carried the most pop per ounce.

I just completely forget I even have it on me most of the time, which is just what you want with a carry gun. Funny thing is that I don't usually notice it on me, but I certainly do notice it NOT being on me...

My open and conceal carry is the sw99 .40... It was the gun that felt most comfortable in my hands and at the range. My favorite gun however to shoot is the Smith and Wesson 686 LOL I love revolvers!
