Freezing feeder rodents alive?

Just come to the Orlando show next month...

although there are SOME Repticon shows without a frozen rodent vendor, most of their shows do have one, and prices are reasonable. You can always check with them to make sure there will be rodents, if you don't want to go otherwise. Check out their site:

http://www.repticon.com/orlando.html

They may still add more vendors to the list in the next week or so.

You are from Florida, so it will be a little difficult for you to do this......
but, in December or January, get in your car and drive to Maine.
Get out of the car.
Take off all your clothes.
And stay there uncovered for a good half hour.

THEN tell us if it is painful.

I live in RI, and just going to the mailbox in January in a huge winter coat is an ordeal when the wind kicks up....
and without gloves it most definately is painful....
LOL! I have enough body fat that it would take forever for me to freeze! ;)

Point taken. I'd never do it, I was simply wondering....I prefer bulk frozen, personally.

LOL! I am quite the chub myself!
I am glad you took it the way you did. I did not want to appear mean or snarky or anything. Supposedly rodent physiology is much like our own, which is one of the reasons scientists use them for research. So, if something would hurt you, chances are it would hurt them as well.

Is it ok to euthanize them that way, or is it a hard way to die? I hear people say they will fall asleep and die peacefully, and then I hear that it is horrid, long, and very painful. Not sure who is right. I have never studied the effects of freezing to death so was wondering if anyone here had any knowledge of this with regards to rodents. My gut feeling is that its gotta be a nasty way for them to die, but my girlfriend thinks they will pass out once they get cooled down enough and die in their sleep and its not so bad. Any thoughts? Im gonna keep googling for info and see what I can find.

What I did with furred feeders after my homemade co2 chamber broke was have hubby break their necks with a pencil. Rather quick if you stun first so they do not struggle. Sounds like work and you would have to numb up a bit, but hubby had processed our meat rabbits so he was ok with it. Once the neck is broken you can freeze them and does not cause issues with the snake, f/t is f/t to them. Note you have to be quick between stunning and severing the spine or they suffer a bit because they are coming round from the stun.

When my C02 Chamber is down(out of gas). I take a screw driver and put it behind the head and pull hard at the base of the tail. I dont stun. I just do it. If your quick enough it is over in less than a second...

But have the stomach for it. Thats why I built the Co2 chamber( I raise fancy mice too and they can be very cute, hard to put down).

Pinkie, and peach fuzzies go straight to the freezer.

LOL we had to stun first because we had some mean lil buggers. No matter how he held them they got turned around and would take a chunk outta his hand. Fourth time with 15 more to go he said forget it and stunned first. I have heard of folks stunning really heavilly then tossing them in the freezer that way but it is still inhumane to me.

It just depends on the person and I am guessing the line of mice!

Way back before I had CO2, I used to kill them with a sharp blow to the back of the neck by hitting them on the edge of a heavy table or counter. If done correctly, they are dead (or at least unconscious) immediately. But they would sometimes bleed a lot from the nose, so it had to be done outside, or at least in the garage. Before CO2, it seemed the most humane way to kill a lot of them quickly, without getting bitten - even though it could be messy.
