Getting fit

I lost around 70lbs two years ago... i had just recently moved home with my parents having lived away for three years. Mom is diabetic, and has high cholesterol, and had two heart attacks, so needless to say she had to make some huge life changes. (she's great, just so this isnt a depressing post)
When i moved home it almost instantly meant i wasnt eating fats, sugar and salt...but more than that portion control.
I've gained some of it back, now that i'm on my own again, because lets face it: some of the best tasting things in the world have fats sugar and salt. but not very much and i'm in general a much healthier person. My motivation was to help mom with the changes she had to make, but they ended up helping me just as much.
My example is kind of extreme, but i was home for three months, maybe? before i really truly SAW a difference. I have kind of slow metabolism too...and was not working out at first. once i saw what was happening just with a diet change, i started working out on my mothers elliptical trainer for a half hour a night...not really vigorously or anything, but it was activity. I'd like to do that again, i had more energy, and felt less stressed. First i need an apartment with enough room for something...lol

In fact, I've been 'going' to the gym for over 10 years. :p The best thing I've done to lose weight has been to give up pop and juice.

That is what I have tried to do as well. We are also planning on signing up to use the raquetball courts at the local community college in order to burn some calories. I used to drink at least 1 20 oz soda a day, and many times two or three, and I've now chopped that back to maybe 2-3 cans per week. The rest of the time I am drinking water. :)

I went for a physical to discover that I'd gained ~10 lbs... and to be honest, I can feel it. I could feel the extra weight, I just denied that it was there until I saw the scale. While I'm by no means obese (and while I don't mind not being a size 0!) I know I'll better getting in shape.

For me, it's small battles. I have too much access to good (but bad for you!) food in the cafeteria at school (college, that is). I have been watching what I eat, and today I had a small victory in skipping a late night cookie! I'm sick right now, but I'll be exercising in the gym a couple nights a week too.

Eat small meals, eat often, about every three hours. Don't do it without exercise, you may have to step it up a bit, walk more or faster, maybe start a little jog with the dogs along with your walks. Don't start off too hard, it sometimes discourages people, 'cause its hard. You already have the key to the exercise thing! Do what you like to do and work it into your regular activities, anything that raises your heart-rate for a while. Eating this way plus exercise helps increase your over all metabolic rate, burning more fuel. It works, I've seen it work.
Kind of restrictive asking people who run 5 miles not to answer, they probably know the answer. I don't use a gym either, money, time. I ride my bike to work and get regular exercise at work and play, if I don't I gain weight (love food).
Ya gotta work it some! Good luck and good losing, stick with it and you'll look killer!
And then we want pics.

From march through July, i lost over 20 pounds in muscle.. i honestly didn't notice until a few of my friends/friends mom's told me i was looking thin and asked me if i was eating! Being on adderall didn't help at all either.. i was hardly ever eating..

Since then I've been working out way more! Running over 30 miles per week, lifting weights, mountain biking often, eating healthier, and a few hours of basketball per week at work.

After i started working out more i've felt much better.. a lot less tired during the day, and able to sleep better at night!(have a sleeping problem.. hence why im STILL up at 6) I haven't gained all the weight back, but its a work in progress!

AFter starting grad school, my physical fitness level dropped a lot. I never got big, but my 6-pack had slowly developed into a 1-pack. For me, getting in the gym helped a lot. But since you don't like that, then just any sort of physical activity that gets your heart going is good. I found that working out made me want to eat healthier.

And the other big thing was eating healthier! I dropped sodas all together. I maybe have one soda a month as a treat. But even that is a 12 oz can, and not the jumbo supersized bucket of soda. That and eating smaller portions and eating slowly.

'Tis true, lol
i live in a university town, with a football and hockyteam...male and female. the local gym is totally overrun with the team members. power to them, but me in my sweats was totally not comfortable there. :nope:

Alan, I'm grateful for your post, I hope I did not come of as not being so. But like Rosie, I'm just not comfortable in certains situations or hearing advice from people who are not going through the same sort of torture I am to get back to my formerly fit self.

My friends I went to school regularly communicate how many miles theyy have run that day. I'd have a heart attack if I ran two blocks. So I don't pay them no mind.

more often than not, my more althletic friends kind of look at me funny when i talk about needing to get back in shape, and then usually give me the advice that just boils down to 'just...do it...'
not really practical advice. i cant...not like they can. its much more difficult for me to 'go for a run' than others. i need practical advice on HOW to 'just do it' lol...i'm pretty sure if i were to try to keep up, i'd hurt myself.

I'm moving dirt around so help solve some drainage problems in the bback yard. This are, the Texas Gulf Coast, is prone to hurricanes and flooding.
So, after plying with the dogs today, I moved about 400 lbs of dirt. That is not really a lot but my muscles will say it's a lot tomorrow morning lol.

It is meaningful exercise rather than going to the sweaty gym ick, so it is easier to get done for me anyway.

I used to really enjoy going to the gym, I had 3 male gym buddies (2 gay,1 straight) who were fun to go with so it really didn't seem like hard work to exercise at all. Due to moving out of the area and us all getting jobs where we wouldn't meet up regularly, I suddenly had no-one to go to the gym with any more. I did still go less often up until I had my back injury, but that really stopped my regular means of staying fit and destressing.
I didn't gain much weight because I was too stressed and in pain to rest and eat much (around 5-6 lbs), but I certainly got the least fit I've ever been then.
As I got better, I've found helping out at the stables, my riding lessons and now walking Rosie have helped me start to regain my fitness and strength. I'd go back to the gym if I had any of my friends able to go on the same schedule as me, but I'm enjoying my alternative exercises and getting plenty of fresh air too.
Yes I am vain enough to want to stay the size I am, but I also just enjoy being active and able to go for long hikes etc without getting puffed out.:)

You're gonna hate me for saying this but... I struggled to lose a little extra pudge for years without success... and then I got on anti-depressants and dropped about 25-30 lbs over two months doing nothing. Now I'm off them but still hover between 108-112lbs (highest weight was 130-something). Even off them I find as long as I exercise, the less I think about what I'm eating or how many calories are in it the easier I drop weight.

About two months ago my mom tested my blood sugar levels and found that they were dangerously high. I went on a high fiber, high protein diet that limited my intake of carbohydrates and of course, sugars. Portion control was also an important part of the process. I also took the opportunity to cut down on processed foods - you'd be amazed at how much garbage you put in your body every day.

Commit yourself to do it, and you'll do it. If you get tempted to eat something that's bad for you, consider the rewards in your choices. If you choose to eat it, you gain a very temporary mental benefit that's soon gone. If you choose to eat better, your physical health will flourish in the long run, and your mental health with it.

As far as exercise goes, anything you do will go a long way. It sounds like you're already off to a great start. Try to make exercise a daily routine. In two months I lost 25 pounds. I've still got a long ways to go (50-70 pounds), but I already feel better and have more energy.

Pepper, you silly! I don't hate you! Good on you, for finding out what works for YOU!!

Bobby, ask Mom to test you regularly, you might be diabetic. If your glucose stays high, you might consider consulting a doctor. But it sounds like in the food department, you found what works for you too.

I'm working on the backyard drainage project today, probably another 400-600 lbs of dirt to be moved, this project is going to take a while..

my work has just decided to pay for 10 yoga classes for a few of us...which i think is really neat. i've always wanted to learn, and now i get to do it with the people i spend the most time with. i'm hoping that this will be a good start. :)
