Getting high injecting snake venom

He's as flaky and shaky as I'd expect anyone who injects themselves with things to be. But at least he feeds F/T :p

Haha I was wondering when this would pop up here, I watch all of Vice and if you look for the video where he answers peoples questions he proceeds to eat F/t mice and enjoy it, Sorry I think hes nuts and he is the last person I would trust working with Hots.

Must be totally crazy! But interesting, and funny at times. His hands are pretty shaky. Unfortunately, if he ever does find anything really helpful from his experiments, it will just be considered anecdotal because he is not doing any scientifically structured experiments. It would be nice if some company or university with real researchers would do something with his efforts. But I bet they would be afraid of legal liabilities, so not want to get involved with him.

I am curious if all of those animals are in his own collection. It is quite varied, with pythons and lizards, as well as all of the venomous snakes - even a Fiji Island iguana! Not your typical private collection!

I agree with Kathy
He mentioned he was just taking animals from his work, while he worked at a large importer/ exporter that supplied most of the animals to zoos. This is the only way I could guess him having a Fiji.

The guy's an idiot! Tom Crutchfield has adamantly protested this kind of thing and did so during the Nat Geo program he just filmed that discusses MEDICAL uses for venom of which there were many. It's terrible PR for people who already think we're nuts. There is no scientific basis for this, and you can see all the lumps in his skin from former injections. You are NOT immune to snake bites and he is incorrect that he is immune. Free handling snakes, stressing them out by milking them everyday. I've never had the flu EVER and I've not had a cold in 5 years....not because of injecting! Looking young can be genetic or taking care of yourself. Most people would not say I'm 50....You judge.this photo was taken a couple of weeks ago...I can tell you it will NEVER be due to snake venom....I am giving credit to my mom's good genes....

I would agree that he's nuts and that it further gives snake-keepers a bad rep.

(And MegF, you really don't look 50! But that tortoise does... :) )

The tortoise was 22 years old to be exact and weighed in at around 150 lbs. he had bigger ones that were 50 years old, but weighed over 300 lbs....they were very cool critters! And thank you for the compliment...it wasn't the idea when I posted it but when you get to be half a century you take what you can get!

LOL... That's Steve Ludwin... He uses a forum I'm on... Yes he's nuts, but they have found his blood fights infections during clinical trials I believe.....
And He is/was the guitarist with Florence and the Machine....

Bill Haast done the self immunisation didn't he? And he nearly got to the century..

And all the animals are his AFAIK.... He keeps loads of stuff..

Yup, Bill made it to nearly 101.

Poo flinging crazy with mutant venom enhanced blood? Count me in! ;)

His stuffs seems well kept for the most part. I'm certain he does not milk every snake every day, that's why some of the venom was frozen, he rotates animals and mixes.

Should everyone be doing this? No. Is it a good idea? Probably not.

But still, what if there really is some medical benefit?

Bill's blood was used for all kinds of things and there were some interesting effects. This cat might be on to something.

I completely agree with you with exception to Crutchfield. Since when did he become such a model citizen and spokes person for herps? That's like naming Casey Anthony as mom of the year and using her for Gerber Life commercials.

Yep... He only uses very small amounts of a number of venoms to create his cocktails.... Though I seem to remember once he managed to inject the full dose off a number of snakes by mistake..... He went to the hospital the next day as he wasn't feeling well.. And when he told them what he'd done...... They didn't believe him.... LOL

Nice. I'm sure the doctors had a field day with that! LOL!

Not that I'm saying everyone should follow in this guy's foot steps, at least his animals appear healthy and kept in proper/secured enclosures.

There are many many more keepers committing far worse "sins" against the hobby than this guy. I would trust him more than half the people I see buying hots at the local shows.

Tom at least has far more experience in the field with venomous than this guy and he has never injected himself. There's no telling if living to 101 was due to injections or just good genetics. I had plenty of over 100 patients that came in for various x-rays that were fairly chipper folk and they never injected themselves. Steve has no clue how much he should use...he's just experimenting....if you really want to make this a useful experiment, then you need to make it scientific....no one is going to go off of...well, you put a drop of pure venom here, then you take the needle with dilute and you push the venom into the skin with the dilute...how much venom went in sir? Uh, I don't know...uh...some amount....What affects is it having on your blood, kidneys and liver sir? uh, I don't know..haven't had labs done each time. What about that hole in your leg where the tissue necrosed....is that a problem for you? Uh no...the flies are leaving it alone now...mostly....

Meg...

Exactly. What he's doing I wouldn't even place within an anecdotal realm; to me, it's pseudoscience just for some attention. I loved your last part. LOL

Couldn't help it..when he was showing the big hole in his leg I'm thinking....and...this is good eh?

Maybe he is thinking it would react the same as with bees. I know many keepers that will sting themselves with bees to become immune. I know one that did it with his son that had a mild allergy to bees. After a period of time, his son no longer had an allergy.

Or maybe venom helps with arthritis pain like bee stings.

I say to each their own. If he is killing himself, then so be it. It is his choice.

I won't say if I feel it's right or wrong, we are all on one side or the other I think. But I think the possibility of the benefits would be worth some time to properly research, if the benefits are what they sound like they could be it may be worth it's weight in gold. Other than that, I would rather he kill himself by doing what he's doing than be out trying to kill or make others suffer at all, he seems like a pretty happy guy, and his animals all look like they are very well cared for.
Thanks for the share Steve, I don't search too many things so I wouldn't have found it otherwise. I said to Ryan when I looked at the time on the video "geez why are all the youtube videos Steve watches longer than 10 min!" (or at least the ones I have watched on your advice LOL).
