Whether you believe it or not, those of us who are newbies but love our snakes and ask asinine questions, for the most part don't do it because we wanted to ask a repetitive question, but because we did a search and STILL couldn't find the answer. So what if the OLD GRAY MARE left.there are plenty others who know what their taking about to help the newbies.
Snakemom,

Personally, new owners who have attempted a search and had no luck don't bother me in the least, but when I see four threads on the same page asking the same question, I know someone isn't even attempting to find an answer.

When someone says, I know there is a search, but I'm not going to use it, so give me the answer... or my question may have been answered here, but I don't want to read five pages, so answer it again... makes me personally hesistant to open a thread and often I don't and there are those that would rejoice at that :)

Those that do their homework or attempted to, but can't find it or have read all the Duke of Url provides and still not sure and asks, I'm more than willing to jump in with my limited knowledge of a few snakes, who may or may not be typical.

Recently several links were given to me, including one that had 49 pages, with the comment that I only needed to read one poster's comments on the long one. Well, I read all three sets of links and I read every single post on that 49 page long thread before I came back to the original thread. To me, if you are willing to put in the time to look and can't find it, I'm willing to help all I can. If you are wanting to be spoon-fed, well, I didn't do my daughter's homework for her, so why should I do someone else's kid's homework :D

Personally, I found that you were willing to dig before asking. Also that you were willing to take the advice given and not go looking for another new owner that would give you the answer you really wanted to hear because it was easier :)

Anytime I go into chat the place is deserted. So it's not just you. Often times, the majority of people are not in the corn snake chat area.

Speaking of questions, what's the latest with the "dilute" gene? Is it a simple recessive, or codominant with anery and motley only? And what's going on with the latest breeding trials?

Oh, you don't know? Wellllll, some people who would be curious about that question are missing some people who would be able to answer that question, and they feel that the "ol' gray mare just ain't what she used to be", because of their departure.

jazz
Ya know, Jazz, you just pointed out in that one quote what makes most newbies feel as though they can't ask questions without ridicule for lack of using the search option, or having used it and still not having found the answer and coming to the forums for answers. AND still being accused of not searching enough.

But it has felt the "experienced" ones sometimes do get tired of "newbie" questions even if the newbie DID do a search.

sorry to ramble, and Jazz I'm sorry i quoted you but could have been many others who posted on this thread....again please accept my apologizes I was trying to use your post as a analogy for many posts on this thread.[/QUOTE]

Very well said. I agree 100%

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to carol again.

awesome post Carol..........."holes-in-the-wall" rule. :grin01:
i think if you were to look around for a few contacts, you could put together something that would get you on the NY Times bestseller list. awesome.

Actually, I researched corn snakes for over three months before I even spoke to a breeder looking to purchase. I purchased everything I needed and set up my enclosure a week and a half prior to my snakes arriving so that I could work out the kinks in heating. I looked up cohabitation, and things of the like. I cannot recall a standard question that I asked in a brand new thread. Most, if not all, of my early questions were not answered in previous threads. The questions I did asked pertained to my snake or situation in particular. It wasn't hard, but many people buy their corns on impulse and follow whatever the petstore guy adviced (like "feed 'em crickets").

now THAT'S a pretty decent newbie's first thread ever. matter of fact, that might be the best "first-thread" ever. i think it's a little better than maybe........."n.e. 1 no abuot feed fire antz to pet sankes" :sidestep:

Dang it.......Wtf did you say? J/K

I do understand where you are coming from, and I too have a problem with "chatese". I am a chatter also, but alot of what I read here sometimes makes no sense when people decide to post questions in thier adolescence "chat" speak.

I agree!

Wait a doggone minute...is that sarcasm? *Honestly it is hard to tell whilst reading...unless you say [/sarcasm] :) *

The responses to my post were exactly the reason why I purchased a snow and a normal het snow from SMR. I am now able to answer the "basic" genetics questions, too (when you start getting into the nitty-gritty with the triple hets and all that...i just link to the calculator) thanks to all of the "pros" and "greats" who responded.

By the way, how on God's green earth did you find that post!?! That is the best searching I have ever seen! When I looked at my previous posts, it only took me back 100.

I tip my hat to you. You are now the Duke of the Search...right along with the Duke of the Links.

No sarcasim meant by me, I think it was a great post!

I agree Carol :) It was the post of someone who did their homework and knew what they were getting into before they got into it. :) It's also why we don't have a Bearded Dragon here yet.... daughter has to do her homework before I will agree to the purchase. Buying the animal is always the easy part :)

i myself am a HUGE fan of sarcasm (pisses my wife off to no-end) but in the comment i made earlier, i was not taking that route. that comment was straight from the heart and meant to give an example of what a first thread can look like when somebody has studied, searched, listened and learned before asking something. kudos to you for getting the "Top First Thread" award in my book.

Funny, because I am constantly asking my husband the same question ("is that sarcasm?)! Hmm, this must be a common husband to wife annoyance.

And thanks for the award. I would like to thank all of you who made it possible! :grin01:

Now, back to the bashing! [/sarcasm] <-------for those of you who are like me.

Me, me, me.....my turn to post and say what I need to say!

Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah.

AND....

Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah...blah blah. Blah blah blah blah.

See...now everyone can get along.

That was the most well-thought-out post of the day. Thank you for that! :grin01:

Now, can we quite talking about you? I have noticed that you have really been hogging the spolight in this thread. :sidestep:

A few thoughts, probably won't help anything, but I won't say I don't usually do this - maybe I do it too much.
And maybe your posts, and their inherent quality, aren't done enough. Just my opinion.

Dean is a reasonable and likable fellow, and he does not belittle pet owners. I hope Rich's agreement with SnakeNbake's post does not also concur with her review of his alleged viewpoint. What Dean has described roughly as resource-hogging honestly comprises the largest percentage of valuable/interesting/entertaining material on this site, as far as I'm concerned.
Agreed.

No one's reputation was lost in the chat thread. The inflexibility of everyone's opinion on that thread (except Dale's one switch) is testament to the fact that no one changed their minds about anything. However, constantly rehashing the issue did not lead to increased harmony but rather led to new feuds and finally Rich (rightfully, I think) killed the thread. Let's not pick up where we were forced to leave off. (Dale, are you and Joe talking again?)
Perceptions, perceptions. What I intended as a plea for self-reflection in that thread was taken by some (well, two) as being "two-faced", and thus, communication was severed.

If you weren't even there, why would you want to get involved in it?
IMO, it's akin to driving past an auto accident. Gaper's delay. You slow down to see the nastiness, and by doing so, contribute to a traffic delay.

I appreciate Rich's lenient approach to this site, because I have as little faith in Utopian internet forums as I do to Utopian societies. The more you decide to forcibly exclude what you don't like, the smaller and more rigid your world becomes.
Bingo!

Pet owners can be interested in genetics. Snake people can be interested in programming. Being a breeder neither indicates genetics knowledge nor defines a scope of interest. These lines might make convenient generalizations to make sense of things, but they are inaccurate at best.
Agreed, and thus my "arbitrary" description of Dean's generalization.

That'll do.
No, it won't. Let's end with this gem:

What're you, a Lisp programmer? :grin01:
:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

I actually miss writing Prolog code from college. I miss bleeding-edge stuff as I continue my great slide towards the middle.

To a geek like me, though, that was funny as hell.

regards,
jazz

I know this may not go over well. But I feel it must be said.
To all those who have been hear a "long time" and feel you need the stimulating convo of snake genetics and "projects". I believe Rich set up sub forums for just those threads. If you are board with our newby questions I don't believe there is anything making you read our mundane questions and answering them over and over again.

You can stick to those topics that interest you and let us newbies try to search as much as we can. And if we can't find the answers, stick to the subforums we posted in and hope and pray we can get the answer we as newbies truly want, without feeling like a total a$$ for asking something that may have been available in search but could not find.

I'm a newby and will forever be "just a pet owner" and am damn proud of it.....so what. anything I can learn bout keeping my snakes healthy makes me very happy, but not the extent that I have to now worry about posting a newbie question that MIGHT have been found in search if I had typed in the correct words!
