I feel the same way. My enthusiasm for the hobby has never been stronger, but I can't say the same regarding my enthusiasm for this forum. It's hard for me to describe my feelings about why this has happened. The trolls and agitators are only a part of it. Sometimes I wonder if it's some kind of culture shock. You and I were used to seeing many of the same, familiar members doing their usual job of making this place great. Now they're elsewhere, there are a bunch of new usernames, and this place doesn't feel like "home" anymore.

But I think there's more to it than that. I completely agree that the quality of thread topics has declined considerably in only a couple of months. The atmosphere just seems sillier around here. I think there's a good reason for that, and I hope I don't offend anyone by pointing it out. There are two categories of posters here: the hobbyist/breeders and the pet-keepers. I place myself in the first group, but I have nothing against the second. I was in that group at one time. However, pet-keepers generally do not have the same passions for the same aspects of the hobby as the hobbyist/breeders do. There's nothing wrong with that. Just as they are unconcerned with the interactions between the striped and motley genes, we are unconcerned with how often Snakie is pooping. Six months ago, the hobbyist/breeder to pet-keeper ratio was probably 40:60. Today, it feels more like 10:90. This isn't the direction I would have hoped for, but it is what it is.

Here are my own conclusions as to how I'm going to proceed. I can't imagine a time when I won't contribute here both financially and in terms of forum participation. I will never completely give up on a place that has meant as much to me as this place has. But I will engage in the serious hobbyist/breeder discussions wherever they are being hosted-- here or elsewhere. And I will commit time and resources to any place where the hobbyist/breeders' interests come first. This isn't an elitist position; it is one of preference. We're all entitled to our preferences.

:-offtopic I don't know if I deserve to be in your "fantastic people" group, but thanks anyway. You belong in that group as much as anyone does.
You know the reason for that ratio, it's because people think snakes are "cool". *shake head*

Waddyamean??? Snakes ARE cool...

(could it be yetanother topic in this thread?!?) :sidestep:

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. I know that people think snakes are cool. I'm one of those people. Maybe that's why I have sixty+ more of them than you do.

I understood Drucifer's post to mean that maybe a lot of the new "pet owners" are the sort who buy snakes for their cool factor rather than through a desire to seriously keep snakes. I may be totally wrong, however.

Not quite clear on the relevance however of how many snakes each of you have in relation to how cool you think they are :shrugs: I'm not sure what you're trying to say with that either, Dean.

That is what I had figured, but for some reason when I saw "Word" I thought of Vaniila Ice.

Did you really think the folks of this board would let you ge the last word in? :grin01:
I actually know a woman, who back in the days of Vanilla Ice, read the song title before hearing the tune, and asked, "What does 'Word To Your Myoo-tha' mean?"

I tease her about it to this day.

Caucasians. ;)

But, But...snakes ARE cool!!

Actually, I got into snakes because of the "coolness" of it. Don't get me wrong...I didn't get into snakes because *people* think they are cool, or bikers/satanists/rockstars/wierdos/freaks that want to make a "statement" think they are cool. I got into snakes because I think they are cool in every aspect of the word. The way they move, the way they eat, the way they live such secretive lives, primarily out of view and out of the way of human contact. The way a snake can never be truly domesticated. Their desire for solitude, their hunting prowess...everything.

It does tend to bother me that "snake ownership" comes with a stigmata attached to it. People like Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Trent Reznor, Rob Zombie...I love their music, and I'm sure that each of them cares for their pet snakes. But they also use them as a marketing ploy.

Thus, people who want to make a statement similar to the music of those individuals buy a snake specifically to achieve that stigmata, whereas people like me are tired of trying to explain to other people that yes, my 2 year old daughter LOVES snakes. Yes, Sammi Snake is actually HER snake, and she takes care of it(reasonably). Yes, snakes make wonderful pets, and no, my snakes won't bite you, if you follow these rules...

There is a difference between snakes actually being "cool"(they are), and the stigmata of "cool" that society associates with them. The stigmata being alternative lifestyle personified, which is attractive to teenagers in angst, looking for a way to "look cool" and be an "acceptable outcast". Much like tattoos are becoming (which is another thing that aggravates me about "cool", but that's for another day...)

ps--We did a pretty goodjob of gettinganother topic inhere, didn't we? :D :crazy02: :crazy02:

Well, I think cats are moderately cool, so I only have one. I know someone who has about twenty cats, and they definitely think that cats are cooler than I do. ;)

And I have zero cats, and will ALWAYS have zero cats. I don't think cats are very cool at all (maybe a little bit...), though they do possess a self-assuredness and self-reliance that I find moderately attractive...

I submit that domestication of a species is more determined by generations bred in captivity and selective breeding of that species done by humans, than "tameness." That is why some people are claiming that cornsnakes are nearly, if not already, qualifiable as domesticated.
