Got my snakes in the mail today!

Sooo, I got my snakes from 3L today, and lovely little things they are! I snagged a yearling (or so) female amel motley for $30, which ain't bad at all if you ask me. Still, the ghost male is my favorite. He has one heck of an appetite for having crossed the whole country with the temperature in the negatives. I know you shouldn't feed them the first day, but he was giving me puppy dog eyes and I had a litter of hour-old mouslets just begging to be swallowed. The female thinks she's alot bigger than she is. She sent the cat soaring through the air (almost broke through the ceiling) and she has the dog really concerned atm. They arrived snug and warm in their box with handwarmers and popcorn all around. I've never been happier.

:dancer:

I might have to post a pic of atleast one of them, because I think there's something wrong with her.

She's got a 'dent' looking thing on her tail, and the very tip is extremely kinky. It's the dent I'm real worried about though. She did just have a meal which was almost too big for her (about the maximum recommended size).

Taking pictures is a multiple-hour process with my modern technology, so can anyone think of anything this might be before I go to the trouble?

If this could be something serious, I'd just as soon take her to the vet.

Feeding on the first day was probably not a good idea. Stressing them to take pics is an even worse idea. Give them a week to settle in with no handling or other interruptions...then worry about the photo shoot.

Could be a congenital defect...could be an injury...tough to say.

If there's a dent, and a kink, my guess would be that the tail was just closed in a deli cup. Just my guess though. Good luck with them!

I agree with the feeding part.. I suggest you get a hold of LLL before you post anymore.. Thats is the right thing to do with your concerns, and yes, they are likely going to demand a picture..

They really sent them through the mail and you accepted them via the USPS? Good luck with that one..

I'm thinking perhaps I have too broad a view on what I consider "mail" to be. I consider "mail" to be anything delivered to my doorstep/mailbox. Some (loser) person just PMed me and assumed I got them in my actual physical mailbox. I had to giggle at that.

They came via FedEx overnight, to my doorstep. The female does have a very large dent in her lower body and her tail is kinked 2-4 ways. As long as she is still able to breed, I really don't care to confront LLL about it. If she needs a vet visit, that's fine, stuff happens! If she's infertile or has other hindersome issues, I'll ask if they'll trade me for a different one.

I haven't handled them any more than necessary after the first day. The hatchling sure is a curious little bugger though. (I named them Rose and Sylvester, or "Sly" for short).

I'm going to hold off on photos for a week or so, if that's what's best for them, and then I'll try pictures. I'm kind of nervous for the female, because she's such a hider. I'm worried she's going to die/get hurt in her tank and I won't even notice. I did take out her branches, since she doesn't use them anyway. I'm scared if she's badly hurt that she may fall and get hurt worse.

Ok ... I didn't even think twice about it I assumed they were a FedEx delivery. If it gets delivered to my house by a person driving a brown truck, someone carrying a large blue USPS bag OR a person driving a FedEx van ... it's Mail. hahaha

I think I would still contact LLL about it to find out what is going on. If the kinks are congenital I'd be wary about breeding it.

My also concerns were getting them Shipped to MN?? really the temps have been pretty cold this winter. I would have thought waiting till spring to get some animals shipped out.

But LLL really doesn't care. I've had 1 good experience with them and 4 bad. Hence the "Good luck" in my first post here.

LLL Reptile in So Cal are very upright and great people!
If you have a problem (which I have had once) they will fix it!
They are a fantastic company to deal with all around!
as far as USPS..??
quoting their site:
"All animal shipments are shipped Fed Ex Priority overnight directly to your door. Live arrival can only be guaranteed when temps. in route are between 35-90 degrees. If the package is delayed by the carrier, our guarantee still applies!"

"Notification of dissatisfaction must be made within 24 hours if you notice any problem upon arrival. If you have any questions or concerns, we expect you to call us first (we are open 7 days a week). "

So if its THE LLL Reptile I know well the prob is not a prob!

LOL, dude, open your eyes or climb out of the box for a moment! There is NO SUCH THING as a company which is immune to making mistakes!

EVERYWHERE you go, you will encounter:
A snake which does not feed due to stress from shipping,
A shipment which was bumped around a little too much during shipping,
A snake with an overlooked blemish,
A snake with unforseen infertility,
And possibly a snake which was packed up a little too hastily, and whose tail might've gotten caught on the lip of the deli cup!

In the words of a wise man, "$h!1 happens!". I'm obviously not looking to start a big riot, so don't pop in here all hotheaded trying to do the same! It's not a big deal.

I'm going to snap a few shots, give them a jingle, and hopefully they will hear me out. I'm not an expert on congenital defects, but if that's what this is, I'm going to have to insist that they replace her. They knew before I even made the purchase that I was looking to breed her.

One thing I'm worried about is that this female is from the "Albino Juvenile" batch they have up for sale, and they're priced quite well. The last thing I want to hear is: "Well, at a price this low, you would have to expect...."

I have to agree with the DAGiant I'm very weary of online purchases but I've dealt with LLL for many years (Escondido location mainly) and they are by far the best store I've dealt with in the 6 states I've lived in give them a call and clear it up
