Got pooped on. >_<

I just got pooped on by Lorenzo. :puke02: I was surprised, to say the least. I had just fed him on Monday and thought he would be ok to handle today (Thursday). I handled him yesterday with no problems. I noticed that his eyes are cloudy and his scales are dimming, so I guess he's going to shed soon! That's probably why he got freaked out and pooped. But, he didn't have a food lump, I thought it would be there until he pooped. o_O So do snakes go more than once after feeding? I'm confused and a little grossed out. :p What can I do to prevent this from happening again? I think I'm going to leave him alone until he sheds, not hold him or feed him. :/ Is that a good idea?

And another thing, as a side not so I don't have to make a separate thread; there is a bump on his back in the middle of his body that feels like bone, like there's an extra vertebrae or something. o_O Should I be worried? Is there anything a vet could do or is it probably just a birth/genetic defect? It doesn't seem to hurt him when I touch it. o_O

Thanks for your time and answers. :)

Sometimes poop happens. No really, it does. Activity helps it to come out so I don't think it was a defense thing, if it were he would have musked, not pooped. I don't know what to tell you about the bump thing though, has it been there long?

Yep poop happens :) My only real advice is to get used to it, and to keep some paper towels nearby while doing any extended handling.

Sometimes you can tell that they need to from the lump that usually forms at the vent, but sometimes they still surprise you.

And yes, if he's gone blue (cloudy eyes), it's typically best to just leave him be until the actual shed is done.

They tend to be a bit defensive during blue times, can't see and such, and just want to be left alone.

Some folks will still feed them, but it's generally recommended that you just don't do anything once they go blue until they shed. Some will regurge, some just won't eat, and others don't seem to care; but "why take the risk?" is the common thought.

First he'll go blue, then that will clear up, then a few days later he'll actually shed (and often poop right afterwards).

Usually you can tell because you will be holding him, and then he will STOP MOVING SUDDENLY. This is usually followed by a slight raising of the tail, then a bulge at the vent, then feces.

Usually when Im holding a snake I keep an eye on the vent whenever it stops moving.:dunce:

Ok. :) Is it true though that they only go once after they eat and not again until they eat again? I read that somewhere and thought it was true.

I'm pretty sure it's been there since we got him. I just noticed it but my mom says she's felt it before.

My girl does not just poo once after a meal! And I swear she just doesn't like going in her viv, because she RARELY goes in there, and often goes when she's out. I've gotten pretty good about keeping a paper towel on hand and noticing the signs. ....but that just took icky practice.

Maybe Slinky is just regular? she starts zooming in her towel, burrows deep and just before that tail is totally in the air.... being a yearling I usually hear her 'fart' right before the 'big' push... man they get smelly as they get older :p guess I am lucky that she gives warning... AND she never goes in her own viv either, alternate place is in her swimming pool, that one is easy to clean up.....
