Help be decide what snake I should get!!

cornscornscorns
There's an expo coming up close to me in November which I've been planning to go to for months, and now all I have to decide next is what I should get (or at least get an idea :p). It would be great if you guys could suggest me some snakes that are NOT fully corn snakes, but are similiar in a lot of ways eg. size, husbandry etc. Currently I'm looking at Jungle corns, but I've always liked the look of California Kings, yet I've always kind of wanted a Black Milk....the thing is, I can't only bring home one!!!! This is what I turn to my lovely friends here because I can't decide on my own :bird: I'd love to hear your opinions please and thank you!

Robbie! You beat me to it!!! Argh. :D

Yep, African house snake. Let me live vicariously through you, please.

Two Black Milks. ;) I love them, so I have to recommend them. Although I think Robbie and Emily's suggestion(s) are good, too. I hear African House Snakes are awesome snakes. Those are on my list, too.

I've also heard good things about Subocs/Trans-Pecos Rat Snakes. Their care is slightly different from Corns (I believe they need slightly lower heat, more ventilation, and smaller prey than a Corn could take comfortably.) but they are so beautiful!

I'm with Salvodorian on this, a hognose! Though a house snake is a good choice as well.

Corn Isle Boas.
The only similarity is the "corn" part but...

Okay okay I'll tag along but I really do think BCI are the best.

Erm... personally, if I'd go with a small Colubrid I'd take a high orange Thayeri- they are very docile, cute, remain smallish(3 feet) and the offspring are always fun to see as you can never quite guess what will come out of the egg :)

Wow... what a question!!! I love them all... Black MIlks, LTR's, Florida Kings, Cal Kings, Asian Beauty Snakes (VBB/TBS), Bull/Gophers, more corns... I've got these and can't recommend AGAINST them.

I've always WANTED a Baird's, Hognosed, Boa (of some smallish type), Greyband, Pine, Black Rat... etc. The list is endless!

If I were to pick ONE... I couldn't. LOL. Although I DO love my Black Milks.

The_Thunderer beat me to suggesting Bairds! I think they're lovely. And if you're willing to consider snakes outside of colubrids, spottes/childerns pythons are a lot like corns in size, a little bit squishier but I LOVE their eyes. My spotted is the snake I see the most, usually out and seeing what's going on.

Gopher Bull or Pine being that there Northern Range is close to and into Canada I like the larger size of the Bigger Rat Snakes but to many to choose from..

There are quite a few great choices, so I would keep a few in mind and find the best example of whichever has been mentioned.
I love my Grey-Banded King Snake, but you'll want to find a well started one, as some tend to be picky. I'm sure you could find a well started one though, and mine is the calmest snake imaginable, has a great feeding response, easy to care for, and will stay near the 3' mark. Not to mention they're just plain gorgeous.

Brooks King Snakes are also great. Mine has an amazing temperament, easy to care for, great feeder, etc... And absolutely gorgeous, as well as being a very manageable size, yet full bodied and fun to hold.

There are also great Milk Snakes, like this Bullseye Albino Nelson's. They are similar to a Corn Snake in size and care, and you should be able to find a nice variety to choose from.

Sorry to jack the thread with pictures, but it's always nice to have convincing examples to see what might interest you.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions! And Michael, thanks a lot for photos :D That grey banded snake is absolutely gorgeous, and that milk snake would look so nice in my little collection :) It's gonna be a hard one to choose! I am leaning towards a little black milk though........HMMM there are just too many choices :headbang: ;)

I'll just say... should you get a black milk... you WON'T be sorry. They're such lovely snakes. Care is SLIGHTLY different than corns. They like to be kept cooler. The high for my black milks is 78-80 with the cool side being room temp (around 73-75). It is cooler at night for them.

There's also a "rumor" about them getting dark quicker in cooler conditions... but I cannot verify that information.

You just wanted to show off that bull's eye albino Nelson's, Michael... ;)
Hey... I resent that... Okay I do like showing him off a little bit, but why not :). The other two are special as well though, it would make me want a Grey-Band if I didn't already have one.

I can't blame you there. I don't have a Black Milk... yet... But they are gorgeous, and it would be so great to watch their transformation to black.

Hey, did you hear me complaining about having to look at him? :bird:
