Her first bite..

Well, tonight was an interesting night. My 5 year old daughter absolutely loves the snakes and was asking if she could hold one of them like she does everyday. We went to take out her albino desert king but she was darting all over the place and didn't seem to want to be handled. So I figured the next best thing would be Houdini, my escape artist of an albino desert king. I took him out of the tub.. handed him to her. She had her hands flat and he curled up in her palms, seeming ok. I turned my back for a *second*, literally and heard a scream. I turned around and there was Houdini latched on to her pointer finger. I still don't know why he did it as he's never showed any signs of aggression, but he would not let go for anything. He was attempting to coil the remainder of her finger also. Is it possible he thought her finger was a pinkie? (no pun intended) It took me a good minute to pry him off while my wife held his body to keep him from constricting. I feel terrible for a) my daughter getting bit and b) having to pry him like that. I really hope I didn't hurt him and that he suffers no permanent damage. My daughter is fine and I think it just scared her more than it hurt her. She bled a little and has some abrasions on the tip of her finger, but took it like a champ and is no worse for the wear. 2 minutes after it happened she wanted to hold our BP Angelo. I'm just glad she's not harboring any lingering fear of snakes now. I had to explain to her that even though they're all CB, they're still wild animals and that I've been tagged countless times, that this is something that is going to happen if you have snakes. Poor little girl... if it was me that was bit, I'd post the post-tag photos and have a good laugh about it but you always hate to see things happen to your little ones..

I'd bet a bunch of Monopoly money that a little wiggle from her finger at the right distance is what triggered it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, little girls are tough as nails these days! Sounds like your little girl is no exception. :)

Wow... I certainly hope that doesn't happen anytime soon to any of my kids... at this point, they'd probably freak out!

Glad your little one AND your snake is okay and that your little girl is responding positively.

Yeah, she's a little trooper and swears she's not afraid of snakes now.. she says it's her fault because her hands smelled like hamburger. What a funny little girl.. I'll post up the pics of the damage later on. Like I said, just a few scratches.. no big deal. What can you do? I just hope the little guy is ok.. I'd feel even worse about the whole thing if he didn't want to eat tomorrow.. We'll see what happens tomorrow come feeding time.

That's what I was going to say- tell her she's a member of Bite Club, and make it a big deal, and tell her we're all proud of her!

Poor little snake was just hungry!

LOL!! No I do not think it is funny your daughter got bit, but the fact that she is such a beast she wasn't even afraid. I know my kids have had there share of bites from my geckos and like yours they contiune to love and handle all of our pets. My daughters friend once got bit by one of my hatchlings which tend to be nippier at that age anyway. This kid was supposed to spend the night, but screamed and cried for her mommy like no tomorrow so I gave the mom a call. I expected the mom to tell her kid to get over it, but instead she rushed over asking if her daughter could now have rabies or other diseases. I tried really hard not to laugh, but I am not good at hiding my thoughts so of course she could tell I thought her question was ridiculous. This lady takes the kid to the ER not even knowing which finger got bit because there was NO mark were talking about a 3 gram hatchling afterall. Needless to say this friend has not been back, but I find the whole thing so silly and I am glad you guys stayed calm because that right there is half the reason your daughter didn't freak. The other half of course is because she is a girl and we rock!!!

Here we are with a few pics surrounding the "incident"..

What a cutie! It's good to see she didn't hold it against the snake.

My daughter was bitten by one of our corns because her tiny finger looked a little too much like a pinkie mouse. It took me a awhile to convince her that Kauket wasn't being "mean" she was just trying to eat her dinner. :D

Thanks everyone.. her face is glowing as I tell her tales of her new internet fame.. :p I asked if she wanted to help feed the guy who bit her last night today and she said "sure, no problem"..

Now that's what I call a future snake wrangler! Love the pic she drew of the experience.
It's awesome that she hasn't been turned against the snakes at all and is still willing to feed the one that tagged her.

I guess recommending alcohol therapy as treatment for her wounds wouldn't quite be appropriate. What a cutie though. Glad to see she's right back at handling snakes...what a natural!!!

Glad to hear that she's ok, and more so that she doesn't take the experience to heart in a negative way. Its always good for kids to understand just what could happen. They seem to be able to handle bites better at a younger age. I've been known to hand a known biter (a small one that can't really harm them mind you) to my step-son and nephew just so they know what a bite is like.

You got an awesome daughter! Glad she's okay, and still likes to hold your snakes. Her picture of the event was priceless as well. Lol.
