Hognose snake eats himself (Graphic)(Video)

That snake isn't starved at all. But that fact only makes it weirder.

If I had to guess, I would say that it ate a proper meal and towards the end of the meal it's head ended up near it's tail and it simply kept eating.

On another note, for shame on the shop owner for not intervening.

That snake wasn't starved, hogs are insane. When in feed mode, they chew on water bowls, each other, and you if you let them. It would have been easier to have coaxed him to let go than grab a camera.

I agree.

That owner should have stopped him instead of taking a video.

That snake doesn't look starved & I know how persistent Hoggies can be. Poor thing, I want to punch the people who made the video for laughing & joking- real 'effin funny, morons! grrr some people's children!

That is so sad, I hope the poor snake is alright.

My best friend growing up had a cat that had such a strong food drive he ate part of his own tail because it had gotten gravy on it. She wasn't there when he did it though, or she would have stopped him for sure.

It's a shame the owner thought a video would be better than the snake's safety or health, who knows how much damage it did to itself.

I think customers filmed it, not the store owner.

Then again, I've been laughed at in petstores by employees when I informed them about their corn snakes eating each other.

I also think it was customers filming it. I can see teenagers/young adults going into a pet store for something and cruising by the reptiles for a look-see and taking video, instead of getting an employee, who's going to believe that story when you try to tell it later? They probably didn't even realize how bad of a situation it was :(

Oh yeah it's messed up, aren't hog noses slightly venomous? I thought maybe he was eating and missed and possibly hit his tail numbing it? and there for him not feeling a thing just kept on swallowing. Just a wild guess though but i like the crazy eater thing from chip, bad thing is that the snake was beautiful looking.

Generally snakes are not going to realize that their action is what is causing themselves pain. They don't have the capacity for that. That's why so many of them get cooked to death on hot rocks and the like.

Yes, they are, and I'm sure he/she envenomated his/her self pretty good. It was clearly bleeding towards the end, and if you've ever dealt with injured snakes (or seen the aftermath of one after a redneck with a hoe), you know they don't have much blood TO bleed. Hopefully it was just tissue damage, and the poor thing heals, but knowing a hog, if it wasn't removed from itself, it was in the same position the next day! That was an "albino" (hog breeders haven't caught on to amel), and I agree that amel hogs are gorgeous!

True. I hate the thought that snakes have to be intelligent to be appreciated. I have met a lot more snakes that tried to eat themselves, a snake hook, the snake I hoped to mate them with, water bowls, and even ME than could come when I called them! Doesn't make them less awesome, though! :)

I agree, the big snakes have the worst rep, although one of my cats caught a huge garter and they lets just say had fun, and there was no blood. The snake was dead when i had got to him or else i would have intervened, but it's the circle of life not much you can do about it.

I have 3 cats and they are all strictly inside to avoid situations like that. I have alot of wild animals including snakes in my yard & I like it that way. :)

My hognose will do that. She has to be supervised carefully when she eats. Brainy she is not.

Pretty sad stuff, but like others have said, hognose aren't always the most bright of snakes. Here's a video of one of mine that decided to get himself entrapped in his own shed: Hognose Ourboros, kinda!.

:wavey: Hi Chip, long time no talk! :wavey:
