KATHY LOVE!!!!
Thank you for those videos on your site.
After nearly 7 years of owning my ghost corn and not knowing what gender it was, I finally found out today. I watched the popping and probing video's that are on your web site as well as printed out the text version and studied and studied and studied it to exhaustion and then studied it some more. I purchased a set of probes, watched the video I dont know how many more times and then probed my ghost. I was nervous as hell, but took my time (although I was nearly sitting on him to keep him still!). He probed about 2 1/2 inches deep. I felt that the probe could go deeper but didn't want to press my luck or hurt the guy. :) So now I know he is a he and will apppropriately name him. Anyone has any suggestions on names?
Thank you again Kathy, it really helped did help me learn the technique and give me the courage and confidence to be able to do it.

You're brave!

I got to see Kathy popping babies at the Tampa show, OMG- she made it look so simple! I'd be scared to try.

(It'd be like when I had to vaccinate my pigeon flock- I practiced on 25 birds before I did my special Dillbird!)

I know! I was watching that video over and over and thinking, but it looks easy. I was also thinking, "darn, I dont have any dummy snakes to practice on"! But all went well, thank goodness. Oh I would love to see Kathy or Rich or any of the other top breeders demonstrate their techniques in person. But they like us, had to learn sometime and on a first snake.... so here's to that first scary step! :D

Congrats!

I have to learn popping soon. I have a friend here who will probe my snakes if I ask, and will probably help me learn probing and popping, but those vids really helped start me off, as I have to learn by the time my eggs hatch, and I'm breeding the first female today!! yippy!!

thanx. It really is easy, but you need a firm, steady but yet gentle hand doing it. It is easier doing it with someone else helping you to hold to the snake still, but it is managable by yourself if you nearly sit on your snake like I did. If somebody could have taken a picture of me while probing they would have laughed their arse off at the comical sight of me holding the snake's tail end while its head was peeking out from under my thigh and the rest of its body trapped between my knees. I had to laugh afterwards cause I could picture what I must have looked like. If you can have an expert show you and assist you for some hands on training go for it. But it is possible to do it. Good luck with the breeding.

Thanks. The breeding will be in about an hour and a half, and next time I go to get some more mice from this guy I'll ask if he can help me with it.

kewl. definitely keep us posted on those breedings. I've never bred my snake, but Im seriously thinking of breeding my ghost (now I just have to name him).

Even after years of practice, popping and probing multiple times per snake, I still get nervous with first-timers during breeding season, hoping I've correctly sexed a particular, and critical, breeder. I've had several sighs of relief so far this year, but still have one male that showed no sign of interest in the female shosen for him. I had to actually put another male with her to make sure I didn't miss her window. I guess I'll be on pins and needles again next year for the same snake.

lol Susan, its kind of nice to know that even the experts still get nervous with popping and probing, not just us newbies. hope all goes well for you.

haha, yeah it is nice to know.

Well this is :-offtopic but you asked. Aurora was introduced into Archimedes' cage tonight and they were both obviously interested (twitching and such) but Archimedes never initiated anything. He tried I think because he was following her around a lot and there bodies were overlapped but he never got fully lined up, probably because he is SOOO much smaller than her. Well, too bad. One unsuccesful try. I'll try again in 4 days, after Archimedes is done digesting.

may have been unsuccessful first time around, but there was interest so thats a good sign. yeah, try again. maybe happen then. Keep us posted. :)

Cute name. I have a cockatiel named "birdbert".

lol cute names for pets. Its interesting to see some of the names people pick for their pets. Sometimes I wish people would put that much interest in naming their kids!

Glad the videos helped!

Believe it or not, those 2, one minute videos took almost all day to produce! A professional videographer came over and filmed, and filmed, and filmed! Then we spent a couple or more hours doing and redoing the voice to overlay on the whole thing. I had no idea - I could have popped and probed hundreds of snakes in the time it took to make that, lol! But it came out well.

I started probing so long ago (in the late '70s, I think) that I can't remember learning it. But popping came later. I had heard about it, but had nobody to teach me. Back then, herpetoculture was mostly a trial and error learning experience - no Internet, few books, and only a few breeders around. (like the dark ages, ha ha!) So I just tried it on already probed snakes until I figured it out. So, although it is great if you can get a live demo, the videos sure beat the ol' trial and error system that used to be the normal way to learn.

Wow! I would have been terrified to do it by trial and error!!

Thanks for putting all that effort in for us beginners!! It's amazing 2 minutes of video can take so long to make.

I can only image Kathy. Like I stated previously, it helped so much. Probing my ghost was like taking a test in school. I didn't want to fail, cause that kind of failing would be harmful to my guy. But now I have an idea of what Iam doing and when I finally do breed my guy and gal I can pop/probe the hatchlings with some confidence. I give Kudos to the "old timers" who did the trial and errors and made it easy for the rest of us to get started on our fantastic journey into the herpetoculture world. :D
