I need some advice & help! Hognose related

That sounds like a good plan for a visually oriented hunter, but hognose are a very, very different snake. I have never seen one strike, outside of the closed mouthed defensive thing. Even when eating live, they just press their noses in, open their mouths and chew. If it smells like food, they will try to eat it, even if "it" is their water bowl, sitting right beside their mouse. I should take some video on feeding day sometime. They are nothing like a corn or BP, or anything else I've kept. It's a miracle to me that they survive in the wild. I have often wondered how their vision is. And how smart they are.

Oh, ok, didn't know that! Well, I won't be of any help then :p

Aw, that will be plenty of help if he ever needs help stimulating the feeding response from a corn!

Kay... that video of the hoggy eating the hard boiled egg...
cute as heck! lmao did he really eat thar whole half egg???

lol I doubt he ate the WHOLE egg, but its funny. The bit where he's like MY EGG BACK OFF

(I did on the strength of this give my hell-spawn boy hoglet some boiled egg white once, and he did - actually - eat it)

lol, that just seems soo odd to me!
a snake eating a hard boiled egg, and he actually takes little bites of it!

darn neat!
and high in protine.. ;)

I've fed hognose bowls of quality canned cat food, raw chicken, sashimi, and frog legs. Many of them really are eager to take bites of anything when they are on feed.

I am so thankful for the hardboiled egg thing! I have a hatchling I bought at a show about two months ago that's refused everything! Boiled, ivory, chicken broth, tuna, salmon, toad. I had kind of resigned myself to either trying to find a live pink or giving up, but he just took a good chunk of hardboiled egg white.

I know it's too early to pop the champagne, but it's the first time the little pest has showed any interest in using his mouth!

Pop the champagne! Getting them to use their mouth is half the battle!

I didn't see any of these posts! But wow, that video was really cute and funny! Do you think I should try it?? He seems hungry, loved the smell of the chicken on the pink, but just didn't.. open his mouth. haha! I can try a hard boiled egg though, if you guys think that might work? It's worth a shot! If it worked for Duae it might work for me.

I feel like if it gets a little food in him he might start eating more regularly, or I can at least smear hard boiled egg on pinkies and hope for the best! haha

I'd probably try a fish-scented pinkie first, as if he does take it, its better food for him. You have plan B and C ........

Good point. :) I was either going to buy some trout or some tinned salmon to scent a pinkie with, not really sure which. I can get both at the grocery store, so I guess it just depends on what I think I should do....

As far as time between feeding attempts, I was going with a week as to not stress out the little noodle. Is that enough?

Plenty. I'll even go every 3 days, but not leave them with it overnight. Give raw chicken or fish (cut to appropriate size) a try, some of mine love it. Not going to be a perfect diet, but it might get some food in his belly.

all fingers and toes crossed!!!!!!!!!

btw - hognoses are diurnal snakes - its a good idea to leave him in peace with his food, but it isn't necessarily best to feed him at night - unlike corns, I know many of us are in that habit but its not so important with hogs

of course it may be you work all day anyway in which case ignore this :)

Thanks guys! I put the chicken in a little bit ago. Should I just leave him be with it overnight again?

If you want to offer food every few days, just give him a couple of hours with it. That would be my plan.

Welp.. he did bite it. He bit it and let go a couple times and then ran away to hide. hahah...

I guess we're on to.. salmon/tuna scenting? Should I also brain/cut/slit?
And if I have to, what kinds of frogs would be safe? I live near plenty of frogs - I could catch one to scent with. And lizards. Plenty of them. hah
