I'm finally getting a snake!

Sorry this is long - I am just VERY excited! SO lucky YOU gets to read the full story (or not). :boring:

I've been hanging out here since April without an actual corn snake to discuss! But I blame you guys for that... I could have gone to Petco at anytime, then I got all picky reading your threads and falling in love with certain morphs. ... we also wanted a hatching; I have just always raised my animals from wee babies. I should have guessed there would be a breeding season and not much available before that time!

Anyway, wanted to go to a local (at least somewhat local) show this Sunday to avoid shipping fees, support local breeders and meet the little one before purchasing... but now my husband has a meeting Monday and needs to fly out Sunday. I just can't get him to the airport and drive all the way to the show.

SO - I bit the bullet and ordered from none other than Lee Abbott! He has some well established babies, so our gal should be here on Tuesday! I know he'll pick out a lovely little snakey for us! I can't wait!! :dancer:

Well I glad for you and thanks for doing some research.
But you know.... Tuesday is going to be like.. FOREVER!!!!!

Don't forget to post some pictures.

Nancy, an Abbott's Okeetee!
Lenny, TOTALLY FOREVER!
I can't wait to get some pics up! I'm going to post a viv photo in a minute...

Congrats!! Those Abotts Okee's are nice lookers! One question though, Are you getting extra set ups? I only ask, because "NO ONE" can get only one! LOL!

Congrats again!

Wayne

Well, if you are going to get an okeetee, an Abbott's from the man himself is the ultimate..I gotta say!! GOOD JOB!!

(of course you know in a month or 2 you will want to get a mate for her....snakes are like crack...VERY addictive!)

OK ALL,
here is a pic of our viv. All set up, but let me how it looks. Any thoughts?

I know the hide on the left is a bit big for a hatchling... I've been searching for a good "thing" to use. I hate to spend much money on a snug little baby hide when she'll outgrow it so soon. I have a cup and a few other containers - I'm sure one of them will be okay.

The first few week or so, I also plan to make room for her deli cup that she is shipped in.

This Eco-Terra was on clearance, so I wanted to pick it up for the future... do you think I could do a hide within a hide? Or should I just take that out?

Thanks!

pedestal is to give the UTH some space off the furniture.
cool side thermometer and humidity gauge are there, just hidden from view in this pic.

I'm waiting for your picture to load. A toilet paper roll or paper towel roll is something hatchlings like. No kidding they outgrow baby hides so fast. But they can squash into a medium-sized hide well into adulthood! Just fill it with aspen.

Ok, picture loaded: add a suction cup vine on each side, and take one of those six foot scrunchy vines, cut it in half, and just jumble it along the back wall. Baby snakes waht cover. They can hide in that and spy on you.

I think you viv looks great! Two good hides, nice deep substrate, a good digital thermometer, extra paper towel tubes and some artificial foliage. That is a very nice set up! I almost want to move in my self! ;) Are you using a under the tank heater with that? If so, what are you going to do to control the temp?

Looks Great!

Wayne

I love it when new snake owners are so informed and prepared!! I can't wait til you get her, but you know pictures are required...lots and lots of pictures!!! :)

I remember being that prepared for my first snake, it's a great feeling to know there's gonna be a little slithery in that tank soon. It looks good, but as Nanci said babies like to hide, they won't even use those huge hides mostly in the beginning, you'll just keep seeing someone spying out at you from the vines or under the aspen.
Congrats on your awaiting little one though, as said if you're gonna get an Okeetee getting an Abotts is the greatest thing you could do!

So what are you getting next? :D

Congrats! We had ours shipped to us as well and the waiting about killed me. But it was well worth it. I am a little jealous as well! I have decided that I also want an Abbott's Okeetee. We have an albino Okeetee and I think having an Abbott's Okeetee would make a nice pair of snakes. For now though I will have to live vicariously through you and others on here that have an Abbott's. Can't wait to see pics!

Nanci, good suggestion on the vines. The one I have is a bunch of short stalks stuck into a "rock" so I can't spread it out, but I'll look for some more to fill things out a bit.

I have a rheostat on the UTH and have done testing to make sure I have the right temps. I'd like to get a proper thermostat, now that I know that's really the thing to have. But as long as this one works and keeps my temps stable, I'll stick with it.

... the lock because I have little ones. They are good boys, but you never know and then friends come over..., so only I will have access to the viv.

STOP making me think about the next snake! First things first!! LOL.

Thanks for all the replys

Craft store are cheaper than pet stores for fake vine and such.

Now what morph will go good with my snake, hmmmmm. LOL

Hi Leonore,
congrats! That's so exiting. I'm very happy for you.
The viv looks great.
Did you purchase some baby mice yet? :eatpointe

I was so overeager that I had the mice one week before the snakes.
