Injuried wild corn

Buzzard

two corny
So I am driving down US 231 this morning when out of the corner of my eye I see what appears to be a DOR snake. Then it moved, so I pulled over as quick as I could and walked back to where the snake was. Thinking that it was going to be a copperhead or some other snake. Well it wasn't, Its a pretty little corn BUT it is injuried. Some sort of head/neck injury. I took it home and set it up in a container, gave it water and isolated it from the collection.

It is blind in its right eye from what appears to be an old injury. It can not hold its head up very well (very wobbly), but it has been curious about movement(turning towards my moving fingers). It hasnt struck at me or anything. I believe it was grazed, Possiblly has a jaw injury. Head appears swollen on 1 side to.

Here is a couple of pics. Its color is more normal than my other Alabama corn snake. Since it is so classic looking, I am hoping it recovers so I can release it.

poor thing I feel so bad, I had to leave it at home while I am at work. Hope it is doing okay.

I hope he makes it. Thank you for picking him up so he didn't get smashed by the next car.

That was my thought too. I know people around here kill them just because... I have a wet land behind the house with large feilds. Hopefully it will recover and live back there.

Very pretty! :O

I'm glad you picked it up, other would have just left it to die. Normally I advise leaving wild animals alone, injured or not. Unless the animal is injured by something not natural, of course, as is the case here. Hopefully they make a full recovery!

Poor guy. I hope he is ok.

Great job taking the time to get this guy from the road and probably certain death.

Thank-you. As has been said most people wouldn't take the time to save the poor guy. Hopefully he makes a full recovery, and lives a long happy life in your backyard.

I think people dislike snakes and have hatred towards them because as a child they were told that Satan was supposed to be involved with snakes...
Dumb is you ask me, they're harmless little creatures that god created for our enjoyment.

^ Haha No, it can't be the fact that snakes eat cute little fuzzie things, hiss, strike and have a general lack of cuddlyness that makes people dislike snakes. I've never heard of satan being involved with snakes.

Good luck with the injured snake though!!! I've tried to take in injured animals before, but they've never worked out. It's usually been baby birds or bunnies, not snakes.

Was that sarcasm, or have you really never heard of Satan being involved with snakes? Think Adam and Eve and the snake that lured Eve to eat from the tree. Although I agree with the lack of cuddlyness idea, I agree that a few people equate snakes to Satan. I mean look at the people who handle rattlesnakes in the belief that God is protecting them. To me that means more than just God is protecting them from the venom he is also protecting them from evil. But I've never been much of a theologian:nyah:.

Anyway, good job rescuing that little guy! Hope he makes it!

Nice job saving the dude.
It kinda does tick me off that people don't care for snakes just because the don't understand them... :(
Hope something nice come with your new good karma!

Likely was clipped by a car. :(

Any chance you can get some injectable steroids? Especially if there is any swelling, this can help them out a long way towards recovery. Personally, we've got a fair number of hit snakes back up to speed: a male Kisatchie that lost both hemipenes and part of his tail, another on that struck a car that passed by it and really tore up a jaw bone (small meals after that!), a Louisiana milk that had its head ran over (actually, I did this one....sigh), etc.

Well after getting home last night and having to explain to the wife, why there is another snake in the house, I took it out to give it a good look over. There is some road rash on its back but nothng that looks like it has caused internal issues. It still has a hard time holding its head up. Still very wobbly. I also noticed it was not using its tounge. So I opened its mouth and it felt like it reset its jaw. When I let go of the mouth the tounge shot out and it seem to start using it as normal. It might have been grazed in the head and the tounge may have been stuck on the teeth, just a theory. I still do not like the way the it is holding its mouth, and moving its head. It is for sure blind in the right eye from an old injury. I hope it makes it one more day. I am thinking if it does a vet trip is in order. It is a good hour and half to the reptile vet. But if it is this determined to make it, I should put at least that effort into helping it....

Aw, I hope your rescue makes it. I'm one of those people who stop to chase snakes off the road, move turtles to the other side, and try ardently to avoid running over the gajillions of frogs bent on suicide on warm rainy nights. It's cool that you took the time to help this fellow.

LMAO... Frogger.... I do the same thing.....

Wow, that is an amazing looking corn snake. Thanks to you it's going to have a chance at life it probably would not have had if it was left in the wild when it's that badly injured. It reminds me of my Zoe who's a classic normal. Very gorgeous! Good luck with the little guy and hope to hear his doing well once he recovers.
