Is this okay?

Alright, I have my terrarium set up. There's a heating pad one one side, and a daylight heat lamp above the tank on the same side. They're both on a timer, the heat pad will be on during the night (probably from 5 P.M to 6 A.M for this time of year?) And the daylight lamp will be on during the day for the remaining hours. They'll never both be on at the same time, though one will be cooling down when it's shut off by the timer while the other heats up. So they'll probably both be warm at the same time...

I'm just wondering if this is okay. I know a heat lamp isn't necessary. But will the heat pad being off during the day effect digestion?(Should I set the timer so the heat pad is on longer than 12 hours..-give or take- and the heat lamp on for just a few hours a day? -when would be the best time to have the heat lamp on?-) Should I just replace the bulb with a normal lightbulb and forget about all this worrying? lol

Just use the heat pad and get a thermostat..... That will solve all the problems...

I agree, forget the heat lamp just use the heat pad. Make sure you definitely get a thermomstat, that is very important. I didn't have one for a while until one day I measured the temperature and I realized how hot those suckers get, it was over 100°F. No wonder my poor snakes never used the heat lol.

Yes, having the heat pad off can affect your snake's digestion. They need "belly heat" for proper digestion, and the under tank heat pad (UTH) is designed to provide that ventral heat.

Corn snakes don't need air temperatures any warmer than we humans. They also don't need a basking spot with high temperatures. Heat lamps are designed to meet the need for very warm ambient temperatures and a hot spot to bask. They tend to make the air very dry, also. If I were you, I'd replace that bulb. Who needs more worries, after all?;)

Most of the pet stores in my area do not sell thermostats. Its not something they suggest to buyers so they don't carry them. I buy mine online from LLL reptiles and supply.

I've purchased several things online from reptiledirect.dom. They have a banner at the top of this forum that you see sometimes. Individual items are much less than a pet store, but shipping does cost money. I compensate by buying multiple items, even if I won't need them for a few months.

Okay, I appreciate everyone replying. But I can't buy anything online unless they take something other than a credit card - i don't have one.

And If I choose to use the lamp and heat pad, would it be okay?? If they're on during seperate times it couldn't burn the snake right?

Hm.. I can see I'm not going to get a straight answer. Does it matter why I want to use both? I asked a pretty simple question- but forget I asked one in the first place.

Moving on.

yes you can use both, if u really want to.

i even know some people that only use heat lamps, but keep them on 24/7. you should be fine with the UTH and the lamp. just check the temps to make sure they are consistant and within the correct range.

You can set up a PayPal account using a checking or savings account to pay online with most merchants, including ReptileDirect. Your account info stays secure that way.

Good luck!
