David, this is one of my favorite snakes. Very black Black Rat Snakes.

Brings back memories of when I was bringing home anything that crawled, climbed, flew, slithered, squirmed, or jumped.

What makes it a "blacker" one? I still see pattern on it so I am assuming it is a juvi. I've seen some solid black ones here in the Carolinas. Do you know locality info on that one?

I wondered the same thing. I've seen pics of "blacker" ones myself. It's still an very nice looking snake though.

This local is from the blue ridge mountains. They get much darker much faster. This one is just as black as it is now a year ago at capture. This is often reffered to as "Jet black" phase

The point about this one is that at birth it had the same dark color. And yes it is a nice snake! Thanks!

We have black rat snakes here in Missouri. Most will show some pattern as an adult. Every once in awhile you will find an almost solid black animal though.

That is one pretty snake. I am very partial to dark colored snakes, and this is pretty nearly perfect, just enough white on the ventral side to show how black the black is!

male, w/c from around Boonesboro MD...My friends girlfriend worked at a nursing home there and caught this one twice as a yearling in the nursing home...He's over six feet now and as black as I've ever seen one; Indoor pics with a flash on most cams almost always brings out their pattern...

female, captive born from a breeder in KY...She's 9 yrs old and not a breeder any more; she's got the easy life :*)


Always assumed the variability between "patterned" and "jet black" was just that. I've seen black rats from the Frederick MD area as patterned as my female, and those in Baltimore Co. and Harford Co. MD (where I grew up) were generally darker, with the pattern harder to see. :shrugs:
