Yesterday I bought my first snake. I fed him and put him back in his cage and have not touched him since. He moved around for a bit, but since then has only lay coiled in one spot or another. Just wanted to make sure that was normal. Also ]the habitat[/URL] might be one reason. No worries though, this is only a temporary solution to last me until Christmas!

Perhaps you should have waited till after christmas *before* buying your snake.

If that 'lamp' is supposed to be for heat your snake will probably be dead in a few days.

Please do some research on this site on how to keep a cornsnake before it's to late.

And either return it to the shop to bring your snake back of buy an adequate setup today.

I feel so sorry for all these snakes suffering because somebody just bought one in an impulse and then toss it in some plasic tub to die miserably.

Why not suggest an adequate set up and another heat source instead of being so negative in your post.

Hey cas0001.
for you question, sounds normal for and snake after a meal.
What size/old is your snake cause the picture is way to small for my eyes to see. I ask to see if you set up is too small. If you think is is you could also check out a sterlite 36 to 40 qt containers.

I do understand your concern and agree with you to a point, I do not like impulse buying of pets either. But just the fact that Cas001 took the trouble to find a forum indicates to me that he/she is willing to learn. If he/she didn't care, she wouldn't bother registering...just my thoughts.

Honestly I don't see much wrong with the setup other than the possible heating issue which is easy and cheap to rectify...I keep my little ones in containers very similar to that one and have never had any problems. In fact I ENCOURAGE people to keep small snakes in small containers as they feel more comfortable and are less likely to have stress-related eating problems.

Cas001 you will need adequate heating though, lights do not work. :) Heating cables and small heating pads are really not expensive.

Congrats on your little one! :) Hope you have many years of fun with him/her.

No she didn't. She could have looked into a caresheet first. Or used the 'search' function. Registering asking here 'come and tell me everything i need to know here -> ... ' isn't really bothering.

Why on earth is it OK to wait 2 months for an acceptable cage setup? Your mommy buying it as a cristmas present? That's just not using your brain. You should just take a few minutes to read this forum, go to your bank account and buy the setup your snake needs. Or return the snake and get a hamster.

What bothers me is the snake is either going to be cooked by the lamp, regurgiteds to the stress of direct feeding or bad cage setup.

A working picture of the setup:

Its not ideal certainly, but if the temperatures are monitored very closely the lamp is not a completely unacceptable temporary heat source. My normal was kept for TWO YEARS before I got him in a small tank with simply a low wattage bulb in the middle of it, kept on all day and off all night, and he was healthy and happy enough when I got him.

Double het, you do seem to be a bit harsh on newbies, I have seen some negative replies from you on many threads.

I really don't like your attitude, Double het. You have been extremely negative since day one, and quite frankly...it's getting very old. Why don't you drop the attitude and work on trying to be nice to people. Afterall...this forum is a place where people should feel welcome and encouraged, not condescended and insulted.

And just for the record...I see little wrong with that picture as a temporary setup. The light will provide adequate heat for a temporary home, and there is a hide and water. Here is a picture of my .het amber stripe's home for the first 2 months that I had him. It is called a quarrantine, and it is for his and my other snake's protection. How would you like to tell me what is wrong with my setup in this picture? Of course I moved him after a 2 month quarrantine. But that is the same amount of time that this individual is using his temporary setup for.

And I ASSURE you...I am not a newbie, was not a newbie when I chose that enclosure as temporary, and I definitely will NOT stand for your insults...

I think that Cas0001 did the right thing in finding this place and signing up. He or she probably listened to the person at the pet shop, and did what he/she was told. That is not always best, as we all know, but to me this situation does not look dire.

Cas0001, I hope that double het has not discouraged you, or made you feel anxious about posting here. MOST of us are very nice here. Some of us have been keeping these wonderful creatures for a very long time. There is an ignore button that can be found by looking at the offensive party's profile. If this person offends you, use it! He is very close to joining the select few on MY iggy list!

I actually think double het had a point. But double het could've been a bit nicer.

But on a different note:
Welcome to the forum, Cas0001!
I'm happy for you that you got a snake. I'm glad you're seeking information. There are worse things that you could've done, i like the fact that you're actually care enough about the animal to find out about it's care. But again, I cannot stress enough how important it is to do your research before you buy.

What point would that be? As has been said...there is very little wrong with the picture as a temporary shelter. People do things like this all the time as a means of quarrantining new animals, as well as simply a matter of temporary housing.

As long as temperatures are monitored and the snake is eventually moved to a proper enclosure...what is wrong with it, and what, exactly, is double het's point? The O.P. already knows that the enclosure isn't perfect, and already knows that they will need to get a proper enclosure ASAP...so...what, exactly, is the point in coming online and making somebody feel like crap for absolutely no reason?

There is no danger in the setup as shown, as long as temperatures are monitored, and not allowed to get too hot. In fact...it is one recommended way of temporarily housing snakes in the book, "Cornsnakes in Captivity" by Don Soderberg. Is double het. gonna come on here and tell Don S. that he is an idiot for making such a recommendation, and that he needs to do some research before getting a snake?

The bottom line is, quite simply, that double het acts very rude and condescending in his replies. That is uncalled for. ESPECIALLY in a situation such as this where there isn't ANYTHING about the original post that indicates an immediate danger or lack of research on the part of the original poster. It may not be ideal, and it may not be the way double het would LIKE it to be done...but there is nothing immediately dangerous or inherently wrong with the setup, providing the O.P. monitors the temperatures.

In other words...double het. does NOT have a point, other than to make people feel inferior and to act like an arrogant...YOU fill in the blank...

Go Chris, I agree with you. My hatchlings are in a rack with a sterilite shoe box, paper towel, water dish and a piece broken pottery as hide. Heat cable for heat on rheostat. susang

How about you get that stick out of your arse? I could't care less of what you and your little care-bears think of me.

Back on topic. Topic starter doesn't even know what the temps are. If you bothered reading mine and her messages you'd know that THAT is what's wrong with the setup. For all we know it's 35 degress celcius in there. take a sec to read her message history.

As well as this her first snake. What do you think she needs quarantine for? The dog?

So just go to a care-bare forum where everything has a nice suger coating and everyone takes ages to make sure everything is sweet and nice. I care for snakes. Not for your little 'Oh noes! She's not very nice!' I am going to defend the poor topic starter for no reason to spite her. Then even when the snake dies miserably everyone still thinks i am a sweet guy.
:puke01: You know what. Your arrogant and you don't even realise it.

She doesn't need a quarantine tank, it was NEVER implied that it was a quarantine tank, tyflier was simply saying that experienced owners use this set-up as a quaratine sometimes and so there is nothing wrong with using it temporarily.

Next, you do not know that the OP doesn't know the temps. Fair enough there is no sign of a thermometer in there, but they haven't said they don't have one. So don;t tell tyflier to read bakc over the messages, because YOU obviously are the one who needs to do that. Tyflier (and me earlier) said IF the temperatures are monitored closely its an ok setup for now. And IT IS.

Have you no reply for my post? My snake who was in a set-up like that for TWO YEARS before I got it and never refused a feed, never had a bad shed, never got sick? I must have missed the part where he died a painful death because of it... :shrugs:

Quite frankly, if we should all join a "Care Bear Forum" I think you should join an anger management forum, or perhaps one where you are taught how to behave in a civil manner...

Everyone makes mistakes, EVERYONE was a newbie at some stage...jumping down their throats and crapping all over them is not the way to rectify any possible problems. Most people are willing to learn and can be guided without being downright rude.

How you view your opinions and how you are made yourself heard is up to you, but I think you will find that people are more likely to take your advice if you are not a rude, "know-it-all" wise ass about it.

As I said, I see nothing much wrong with that setup. I keep my hatchlings in small tubs, on newspaper with water, hides and heating (regulated) and i have not have any problems with this arrangement!

I never said i was a know-it-all. Why would i post questions on this forum if i knew everythint ;)

I just have an extreme dislike of people jumping me because they think i jump people in a way *they* don't happen to like. I am not here to fit their personal standard. Pot calling kettle black huh? Especially with made up arguments :flames:

Otherwise i am a pretty decent guy. I say what i think. Direct and to the point. Some countries that's more accepted then others. If you think you can still make a point with a trunkload of sugar be my guest. I won't bother you if you do so. Other the that Life is hard. Not everyone is going to react in a way you prefer.

You know what. TS can just keep that snake in that tank you all seem to like so much. Then perhaps the snake doesn't have to suffer long. Temp controll is way overrated anyway. :wavey:
