just bought my first snake, so i guess here is my first question

Double het, you are very rude. This forum is supposed to be a place to chill out, and HELP newbies with questions. Not to jump all over them. If you can't bother to be civil, don't bother answering at all. We don't need your stink. You are very close to swimming in my iggy sewer with the other asshats.

Ok...so I've been reading so far and keeping my mouth shut but Double het has really started to bug me....

We all get it...you think you need to bash every newbie's head in if they slip up....guess what....you probably have 2 cornsnakes you've kept for 3 months and you think that because somebody bashed your head in when you first got on here that you need to return the favor...guess what...you're not the snake god you think you are. Just cut people some slack and help. What the hell is the point of just making the comment "you're snake's gonna die" ???? Does that help them fix the problem? NO! How about, instead, think back to some point in time when you asked a stupid question on here and somebody was nice enough to just answer it. Now....RETURN THE FREAKIN FAVOR!!!

I hate ***holes....And normally this forum is a pretty favorable place to be, but slowly enough people like you are moving in here and making this place more and more like ball-pythons.net where nobody can say a word without getting bashed by some jackass who thinks he knows all there is to know about snakes. I guaruntee tyflier knows 100x more about corns/snakes in general than you, yet you're going to continue to bash him and everybody else on this forum because your mommy didn't love you enough. Care-bear forum? Please, all we ask is for a little kindness and consideration from ALL of our members. That doesn't exclude you oh mighty snake god. So if you don't have anything nice or productive to say, go punch your pillow for 45 minutes (an anger management technique I think would benefit you greatly) and come back with something productive.

I'm out...

For the new guy, welcome to the forum. I'm sorry double het has to make himself feel like a man by putting you down. Not everybody is like that on this forum and 99% will be willing to help you out. As for your setup, yes it probably was an impulse buy, but don't kick yourself for too long. Everybody makes a mistake :) All you need to do is make sure you understand what a good setup is and fix it right? The cheapest solution would be to go to walmart and get a small tub with a LOCKING top. I can't stress this enough because that little escape artist will be gone within an hour if you don't have that top sealed. Now, put some airholes in it to help with air circulation and humidity. I would make sure you use a drill bit or sautering (sp?) iron that has a smaller diameter than your snake because, once again, he'll be gone. Now, go get a heat mat from your pet store (about $16) and a thermometer from walmart that has a probe. When you get that, put the heat mat on one end of the tank to create a gradient, and put the probe on top of the heat mat, inside the tank. Make sure you put hides on both sides so he can feel safe at both the hot and cool end of the tank. You don't want the heat mat to get too hot (I don't let mine get over 86 degrees F) and most people buy a thermostat to help control this. The cheapest way, however, (if you're handy) is to make one out of a dimmer switch. There should be a thread on here that is a "do it yourself" kind of thing. I'd take a look at that. I think it'll only cost about $10 total to make it. I hope that this CONSTRUCTIVE evaluation will help you and your snake. Keep us updated and once again, welcome to the forum :D

Yesterday I bought my first snake. I fed him and put him back in his cage and have not touched him since. He moved around for a bit, but since then has only lay coiled in one spot or another. Just wanted to make sure that was normal. the habitat might be one reason. No worries though, this is only a temporary solution to last me until Christmas!

Hey, cas0001 - Welcome aboard... Go to the thread on this forum that's titled "my snake has become aggressive" (or close to that) and find my post about setting up an inexpensive but very adequate habitat. You can get everything you need for $30 if you're creative enough. Just remember ALL you REALLY need are:

- A 'good enough' sized enclosure that is escape proof. MORE than that. REALLY escape proof. The little snot has all day to find and exploit a weakness, and it will.
- Heat source. Plenty of options available, but anything you get will not be good witout a...
- ... way to control it. You'll need either a rheostat (dimmer) or a thermostat. But you HAVE to control that heat somehow. If you use a heat lamp, it could be as easy as moving the lamp further or closer, but that is far from optional. But you won't know how to moderate the temperature without...
- ... a thermometer! Get a digital one. The stick on kind are useless. In Vern's enclosure, I have 2 stick on ones, and a stick on humitity guage...all for decoration. I also have a digital thermometer in there.
- Substrate. Lots of options here. For the budget minded, newspaper works fine. Aspen is very good. Cedar will kill your snake.
- Hides... Your snakes needs two; one on the warm side, and the other on the cool side. Can be anything from a toilet paper roll cut in half (long ways) to something you buy a the pet store. Just make sure it's the right size. Your snake wants to be in a nice, cozy hiding spot.

Did I mention that the enclosure needs to be very secure?

Good luck!

Forgot water. Big enough that your snake can't tip it over. Small enough so it won't get stuck inside. Lots of cheap options there, too. Be creative.

cas0001, welcome aboard. I am sorry that your first post turned out as it did... it's hardly your fault and I hope you won't leave the forum thinking that that's how most of the members here reply.

I bought my first snake on an impulse as well, I did not plan on it and I now know that if I had thought about it overlong I would have dropped the notion... and missed out on something I consider most satisfying and fun( I now have 7 snakes)

You did the best thing possible by joining up and asking questions. I find that reading FAQ's works best for me. So you might want to give it a shot... and you got some really great tips to get you and your little fellow on your way.

Best of luck.

* And on a side-note. Being the loudest and meanest does little to prove a point.

Double het.-

First, let's get something clear...I am perfectly aware of my own arrogance. I've been arrogant my whole life, so this isn't something new. I didn't just wake up arrogant and ugly yesterday, so you aren't giving me any new information.

Second...the reasoning behind using a temporary enclosure doesn't change the nature of the enclosure itself. The setup that I posted pictures of as my quarrantine enclosure is virtually identical to the one the O.P. posted. The reason for using it is inconsequential. The setup is the same. Further, they are both virtually identical to a photo that Don Soderberg shows in his book as an acceptable temp. enclosure. I guess he doesn't know how to care for his snakes, right?

Third...just about every member of this forum has made an impulse buy at one point or another, and we have all needed "temporary housing" for that impulse, until we found time/money/room for a legitimate enclosure. Just because it's the O.P.'s first snake doesn't change the fact that a solid majority of us on this forum have done the exact same thing. IF you decide to keep snakes for long enough...you will too.

Fourth...being a jerk*** doesn't make you right...it only makes you a jerk***. There are plenty of forums around where your manner of treating people will be more widely accepted, so why don't you go play in their sandbox and keep you cat crap out of ours? This forum is FAR from a "care bear" forum...but we are, at the very least, civil. That's how human beings interact with each other. You should try it. It makes for a better day for everyone...

And here you sit, all full of bluster, wondering why everyone is being "harsh" on you...you poor baby. Nobody understands you, do they? It's tough to be the only person on the entire forum that knows what he's talking about, isn't it? I mean, goodness!! You have so much responsibility, what with all of the newbies in this forum that haven't a clue about keeping snakes...you simply must be exhausted from all the brow-beating and lambasting you have to do everyday to drive it through our thick, ignorant skulls...

FWIW...there are people on this forum that have been keeping snakes for longer than you have been alive. And not ONE of them has EVER treated a new owner the way you do. You aren't that special, you aren't that knowledgable, and you CERTAINLY are NOT that important to this forum. Get over yourself. Your knowledge base doesn't even begin to break the surface of what is generally accepted as accurate. Just because you're loud and mean about something doesn't make you right... :shrugs:

Don't know if it's my place to say so but let's give it a rest. I think it is quite clear and obvious that the vast majority of the forum disagrees with the way he answered. Let's just leave it at that... we're simply prolonging it by commenting about it.
If the posts so far did not make a difference, another one won't either. So just ignore it.

Any person that would use sentences like "Are you my mommy" or comparing people to "care-bears" isn't worth my time of day.

You're right. But he specifically called me out...I'm far to arrogant to let something like that go unnoticed and unresponded to...;)

Well thanks, I appreciate everyones concern. First of all sorry for the double post. Second of all, I did at least a weeks worth of research. I was actually completely settled into the idea of waiting until I could afford a proper aquarium before I bought my first snake. That is until my research brought me to multiple places suggesting that it is completely acceptable and even on some accounts desirable to have a smaller cage. I also questioned multiple pet store assistants at different pet stores. Lastly, your personal opinion of me is neither needed or appreciated. Not that how I obtain an aquarium is of any importance to you, but I was waiting until Christmas so I could return home to my job and make a little bit of cash.

Thanks again.

It would be completely acceptable for a moderator to close this topic at this point, I believe. It was a simple question that has already been answered.

cas0001 do not let the rudeness of someone on this forum keep you from learning to care for your snake. There are plenty of pleasant, helpful people here that will be willing to answer questions for you.

For now, I'll leave it open. But if there are any more bad posts from anyone (and there are several members involved here), you can consider your request fulfilled.

And why were images of Joe popping into my head when I read this thread?

Welcome! Stick around. The folks here saved my paniced butt on more than a few occasions.

Despite having done research for weeks, reading, no gobbling, books, talking to snake keepers, going to a reptile zoo and holding the guy there hostage while he answered all my questions, etc., when something actually happened in "real life" with Jo, I needed someone here to tell me it was normal, okay, or confirm that what I had read or researched was in fact correct or the right way to proceed.

Keep your toilet paper rolls when they are empty. They make good hides and if they get pooped on you can toss them into the recycle. My snakies like to boogie in and out of them looking for this and that.

Post more pics! What is your snakes name??
