King Snake!

Found this little fella (gal?) while I was out weed-eating along the fence in our yard. As soon as I saw him I stopped, and captured him to make sure I hadn't hurt him. I then got Margaret to take pictures, and I made a video as we released him along the back fence. :D

His ventral side - and yes, he pooped me. The snakes *all* seem to poop me. Are they trying to tell me something? ;)

And look at his tail - something happened, but that's an old injury to it.

Great find - Eastern Kingsnakes are one of our favorites here in AL. Unfortunately, their numbers are declining in the wild.

It's the first we've seen here.

Very sad to know that they're in decline. Is it environmental or the encroachment of man or something else - or all the above?

All of the above. Loss of habitat and lack of education regarding snakes and their importance to the ecosystem are the main issues that we face.

I found this one cutting grass this week. It was really mellow.

I don't have many kingsnake pics from herping that don't involve blood (mine) in them! Even a few captives. I do find that the easterns *tend* to be more mellow that the more western variants, but I base that only on memory. I love getula, but they are not for those shy about having teeth pierce flesh. The ones that don't bite defensively so often try to eat you. You guys are wrecking my stereotype!

Reminds me of a couple years ago. Late one night my uncle was at his computer desk and he noticed some of his cords were moving. He reached up and a king snake struck at him. He jumped back in his computer chair and fell in the floor backwards. I was on the road so I couldn't go remove the snake so my son volunteered. Needless to say the snake won but was eventually scooted out the front door.

Heh - that's what we're all here for, destroying stereotypes! :laugh01:
