Little critter in the pool enclosure...

Connie and I were out checking on the pool when she spotted this little guy in the corner of the screen enclosure. This is the first scarlet kingsnake I can recall seeing around here. I think another couple of minutes and he would have been dead. He was hot to the touch and gaping his mouth a bit. It gets very hot in that po0l enclosure as there is no cover anywhere. I think we got to him in the nick of time. I sprinkled some water on him to cool him down and allow him to drink a bit. He started flicking his tongue and getting a bit more active, so I'm hoping he is OK. Snapped a few quick pics and then released him out in a garden area we had watered recently. He zipped down under the leaves, so he acted like he was OK.

Been seeing a lot of lizards running around lately. Fence lizards, six-lined race runners, brown back skinks, and green anoles, but this is the first snake (besides black racers) that we have seen recently. Been VERY dry around here, so I guess things are moving around looking for water.

Yeah, we've actually seen a fair number of corals around here over the years, so that wouldn't have surprised me. That would have put me in a dilemma. It was obviously close to being the point of no return for the little snake, so I would have had to either decide to pick it up with my hands, even though it was very small (around 8 inches long, I'm estimating) an unlikely able to get a bite if it tried, or have it die while I tried to figure out some way to pick it up safely. There wasn't anything inside the pool enclosure that could have been used for that purpose. And time was of the essence....

Glad I didn't have to face that kind of a decision... I probably would have done something stupid.

You are a snake guy at heart like the rest of us, we all know what you would have done :)

That is a nice specimen. You didn't open the screen door and let it chase you and get out that way? :sidestep:
