Little Wild Caught Cutie

Dustilyn

Hopeless Addict
This is a little snake I caught up by Jackson Lake in northeast Colorado summer before last. I have no idea what it is, but thought it was beautiful. We left him where we found him

Nice black mamba!! JK- I don't know what kind of snake that is, either, but he sure is pretty!!

Very cute! I think it's a Yellow Bellied Racer. It looks a lot like the ones that I have seen in images. (I've only seen a juvenile in person, which looks drastically different.) I'm kind of surprised it let you handle it.

Very cool! We have yellow-bellied racers in Texas. I have yet to see one since I just moved here and its still too cool out, but I am looking forward to do some racer chasing and wrangling!

Awesome picture!

I didn't used to be able to catch black racers, but I can now! They are _fast!!!_ And bitey!!

He does look like the pictures of a yellow-belly racer. He wasn't hard to catch, but I had a handful of kids with me so we pretty much had him surrounded. He wasn't bitey at all, but sure took off once I let him down. We may go back to that area this summer and see what else we can find. I've never gone herping per se, but it sounds like a blast.

Dustilyn, maybe we can get together and go herping. We'll have to convince John (Colorado Corns from Pueblo) and Lars (Gelshark here) to come with us though. John is great at herping from what I hear and I've never gone before.

Oh for sure! That would be fun. I've already been chatting with Lars about picking up a snake or three from him. It looks like you and I are Arvada neighbors! Any chance you know how to probe?? :D

Nice find! I really need to go herping this summer. So far the only herps I've found aound my area are garter snakes.

Here are two that I caught over the years
One is a juvie and looks a lot different than they do when they are adults.

I didn't keep either one - but they sure are lookers when they get older.

The adults are gorgeous, but the babies are striking too. Was the adult you caught very nippy? I'm definitely going helping this summer to see what else I can find.

Yea, Garter snakes seem to be all over the place in the metro area. I think heading east or south might be the best places to go. Would love to find a hognose.

How cool! I'm always ridiculously thrilled when a wild snake can be handled calmly. So many of them are really very chill about it. Congrats on finding the snake, and on getting that great picture! Thanks for sharing.

He bit me when I first picked him up, but he seemed okay after he realized who's boss. The baby was like a little hateling, wanted to bite and bite and bite (did I say bite?)
The baby I caught when I was walking along the path that goes along the South Platte (between 88th and 104th). All the adults in that area are really fast. We have also caught garters and bull snakes in that area, and some lizards (not sure on the type of lizard, I think a collard?). I saw this one kid that had caught a huge turtle too. Nice thing about the area is that it's right in town.
