Meet Christmas Tree the Candy Cane

Artz and Snakez
Our daughter's first snake arrived today and she couldn't be more thrilled. Took a couple quick shots with the daughter holding her before putting our new girl into her home...where she proceeded to roam around and quickly discovered that her waterbowl makes a pretty nice hide. Although she didn't stay there for long. She's more active than any of the other hatchlings we've had (that may be because she's down here in quarantine and we can actually see her when she's out)

Without further ado:

She's 14 grams...and seems so very tiny. It's hard to believe our others were ever that small ;) The daughter understands that she can't be handled for the next seven days, but I know she's counting the minutes until she can hold her new best friend again :D

Beautiful little amel. I'm about to be a meanie-butt, but candy-canes are supposed to have a *white* background, especially as adults and your little one there actually has a lot of ground color already. It's rather yellow, and that is only going to get stronger as time passes.

She was bought from the breeder as a candy cane. I assume he knows what he's talking about...

And my daughter is absolutely thrilled with her, which is the most important part. She's not part of my plans for future breeding, so I'm not overly worried if she yellows out (I've seen a number of candy cane pictures that have some degree of color on the base. Ians Vivarium has several shown)

Ian's viv also has some Anery A photos in the charcoal section for pictures that owners upload. :p

Just some advanced warning that you'll encounter the "not a candy cane" as she gets older, but as I said, she's quite lovely.

I read the former thread... she was purchased from BHB Reptiles(Brian) so... I would imagine he knows how the animal looks like.

To be perfectly honest, I know for a fact that some morph definitions simply evolve.

The definition for "Okeetee" in corns certainly evolved. And so has Sunglow, I am sure... from minimal to absolutely no white what so ever... what about Pied sided? at some point really low expression won't be regarded as pied sided I bet...

With Leopard Geckos it happened with "Super hypo" and the list goes on with other morphs as well.

So this may not constitute the title "Candy Cane" when you asked the really strict keepers... but this doesn't mean that it's absolutely not a Candy Cane...

She's a pretty little thing! Not to confuse matters, but I would call her a very nice reverse okeetee!! Or high white amel.

I have a baby I hatched, an amel, who I named Candy Cane while I could only see his nose. So I registered him as a red candy cane, and he thwarted me by turning brilliant orange with a _huge_ amount of yellow. Not kind of off-white cream- bright, glowing, buttery yellow! I always get "not a candy cane" comments when I post his photos, then I have to explain the whole thing, yeah, I know, it's just a name...

I wouldn't consider that a Candy Cane either, but I am a stickler for the line bred morphs. Candy Canes are kind of a gamble because the snake will color up as it grows. Even in shed that snake has a lot of ground color, and it will only get more and more as it grows.

Some people may not be as strict about what constitutes a line bred morph. I think your snake will ultimately fall more into the "Reverse Okeetee" category than Candy Cane.

Nice Amel though!

I concur that she's most likely going to be a very pretty reverse okeetee....time will tell!

Either way...we're very pleased with her, and she had her first pinkie with us today (my daughter was over the moon when she actually ate. Although we had to cover the little worm so she'd eat so we didn't actually see it. There'll be plenty of time for that in the future)

And if she turns out to be reverse oketee or amel, no harm. Those were other morphs my daughter was looking at. She just wanted something very bright that wasn't a bloodred (because we already have one)
