My dad just found a chameleon

so my family lives in Hawaii and my dad just found a chameleon in the backyard by the AC, first time we have ever seen one that wasn't in a petstore. I'm assuming it was someone's pet at some point. It is hanging out with my dad while he plays on the computer lol I just wanted to share cause I thought it was really cool.

Looks like a female Jackson's. There are a lot of chams out there, though. No matter, it doesn't belong outdoors in Az!

lol it's in hawaii, I would be super confused if i saw one of these here. Jacksons chameleons is exactly what all the pet stores there sell

Derrrrrp, so much for my reading comprehension today! Carry on.

VERY kewl! They weren't indigenous to Hawaii, but from what I've read, were introduced there in 1972.

When I moved back to Hawaii as an adult, I bought one (for $10 from a roadside vendor) and had him for about a year. I had to move to a different island, so I had to give him up.

He was great! I wish that I could have stayed put for a few years to have spent much more time with him. Where I live now (AZ, Chip!), isn't a very good place for them... :(

If they are indigenous, it would probably be better to release her where he found her. They are tricky to care for. Unless your dad is a reptile person, but even then..But how cool! I was expecting an anole!!

They are considered an invasive species in Hawaii, so you don't want them released there. Officials there used to allow collection and export to other states. But they suspected some collectors were "ranching" them - moving them to new areas so they could collect and sell them. So the last I heard (a number of years ago), they no longer allowed collection and export. I don't know what the newest rules are, but you can probably find out online. Some info on Hawaii chameleons: http://www.hear.org/alienspeciesinhawaii/waringreports/chameleon.htm

Jackson's tend to like cooler weather and are kept a lot in coastal California as pets. I think a species such as veiled chameleons (http://www.veiledchameleoncaresheet.com/) would do much better in Az. They come from Yemen, which tends to be hotter and drier than where the Jackson's come from.

Thanks for the info Kathy! My parents decided to keep her, my dad is going to build an outdoor enclosure mostly to keep her safe from all the feral cats. My grandpa told me chameleons are cute so I might do some research on them and see if I would be able to care for one, if so I might see if I can get one cause he won't let me get a snake.
