My GREAT find for the day!!!

Well, I was just about to hop into the shower when my brother called me and said he had a snake in his house. I didn't think anything of it since the last dozen times he's called, they've been those annoying little baby night snakes (less than 7 inches long). BUT, since my brother isn't into snakes, I decided to head over and help him out.

Much to my surprise, I found this! It's a baby and it did poop and musk on me, but I was elated. I've found severa adults and juveniles the last 3 years, some of which were VERY red, but they've all been monsters and big time biters. So, I've let them go. THIS one is probably gonna be a keeper as it is quite small (but probably large enough to eat a newborn pinky) and is already showing some nice pink coloration.

Let me introduce my GREAT find for the day... Romeo!

Lots of people have been taking "quarter shots" recently, so I decided to join in!

He started freaking out after these shots (and a few more that came out BLURRY), so I decided to cut his little intro. photoshoot short.

He's already bitten me a dozen or so times, so I'm gonna let him settle in before I deal with him again. HOPEFULLY in 5 days or so, I can get him to eat a pink!

Wish me luck! :D

Ah! I waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant one! Why can't I ever find those guys? I've been looking everywhere!

You are a lucky guy Fred!

Well, I hope I don't "JYNX" myself, but the next one I catch CAN be yours. I'll let you know when I catch the next one.

You want an adult, juvenile, baby?? Let me know! LOL.

heh... nice pun (goofy!)

Considering that I've been out a million times, and have yet to find one, Ill take what I can get! Where does your brother live anyway? And where the heck else do you keep finding them?

We've been finding them right here on our property. He found this little one IN his home (he's got a boys "dorm" I've got a girls "dorm"). Everyone here knows to call me if they find a snake (which is why I "find" so many - lucky me).

Its also a reason why I really NEED to get a snake hook... they find rattlers about 30% of the time. LOL. So far I've been fortunate to be able to catch the rattlers with a large bucket and a broom, but if it gets intense, I just let the bugger go. I've got too many kids and a wife depending on me to get bit! LOL. Well, one of these days, that snake hook will be under my Christmas tree!

/me reveals ignorance...it's adorable...but what IS it?
Sorry Paige! I neglected to put it in there... It is a baby "Red Racer" or "Western Coachwhip". Most of the ones I catch around here are very Red/Pink. Here's a couple of pics of an adult that I caught a while ago...

Notice the "coachwhip type braiding"? Hence its name. "Racer" is also appropriate because this one literally had me running in circles before I caught him. LOL. This pic is just before he found my knuckle and started biting (gnawing actually) into it! LOL.

Sooo, I'm hoping that the little one eats for me and grows to be a much "tamer" version of this one!

WOW!!!. That snake is freaking amazing!. The pictures of the adult were incredible. I wouldn't expect the babies to gain so much color, and I haven't even heard of "Red" Racer. Good luck with him, and I hope your able to feed him successfully!!!.

Sweet Fred, Hope he "pinks-out" for ya! and then grows up pink as well.
Thanks, Kyle! I am SOOOOO tempted to try to feed it now... but I know I should let him settle in first. LOL. He acts like he's as big as the other one in the pics. LOL.

Thanks, Ricky. I've caught several the last two years... and they're so much fun! However, their tempers are quite amazing. They say that Texas Rats are the meanest non-venomous snakes in the U.S... but having never caught a wild Texas Rat, they must be EXTREMELY mean to beat these guys.

They seem quite intelligent too. When I walk into the room, the corns and kings might look in my direction. But when I had an adult red racer, it would not only look in my direction, it would also pull its whole body out and prepare for a confrontation. Too much fun.

And, like I mentioned before, the bigger adult "calculated" where a bite would hurt most... and then proceeded to bite the crud out of my knuckles. Fortunately, I've got a pretty high tolerance for pain. LOL.

I guess you can tell how excited I am?

I guess!. Their faces do have a certain sharp ferocity to them, but you must really see the beauty in them to sustain the same giddyness while taking all the knuckle bites. Again, congrats on the find and good luck the rest of the way. I definitely hope to see more photo's as he/she matures!.

What an awesome looking snake, Fred! I hope he eats for you. If he does, I am requesting a progression thread. Please? :D

Oh Romeo, Romeo, you are ADORABLE!
(doesn't rhyme at all, but hey- it's 2 am)
What a passion!
PLEASE keep us posted about him progress, I really hope he eats!
I thought it was worth asking though, do you know why they progressively get more red/pink? is it dietary, or a reaction to UV, etc? If you know, it might help him really pink up!
