I posted asking about a fat deposit last night, but have an appointment now with the vet so gonna take this chance to post a few better pics of him and see what you guys think of him. I love this guy. He is so gentle.

A woman at the local animal shelter game him to me. He is a little over 7 feet long and about 30 to 35 pounds.

Hes a beauty :) However wheres this "fat deposit"? He looks perfectly healthy to moi?

It is posterior to the vent on the ventral surface. I am going to stop calling it a fatty deposit though. It seems to have gone down some. At first, it was so swollen that it felt very solid as it pressed against the skin like air in a tire. The size of the swell has gone down some and it is now very soft and spongy there. It is still swollen a little though.

Thanks everyone for the comments,
John

I should know something in the morning. When I talked to the vet, he was very helpful. He was honest about his experience with snakes and other reptiles which is modest. He feels confident in his ability to diagnose the problem but would refer me to a vet in Houston if surgery was needed and he didn't feel that he could do it.

Since the swelling has gone down and the "fatty deposit" doesn't seem to be one at all or worse a cyst of some sort, my "father-at-home" diagnosis would be an infection of some sort. There is do discoloration, just a swelling.

Thanks for the concern and I will be sure to update on his health in the morning.

Update!!!

Took him to the vet this morning and the vet said it was a cyst or something. He lanced the area and cleaned out 1/2 cup of this nasty, greyish fluid that smelled really bad. Yuck!!! It was in the tissue all around the vent. He gave me mupirocin to squeeze into the lance until it closes up and I have to bring him back in 10 days. Slim, the name I decided on for the boa, is doing well. He is back in his enclosure recovering from the experience. :)

Ohh!! Good thing you took him to the vet and didn't just go along thinking it was a harmless fat deposit! Poor Slim! For a vet with modest experience- sounds like he did a great job.

Thanks for the reply nanci. :) Yea, I think he did a pretty good job too. I would have rathered more than a local antibiotic, but I think he wanted to go the safe route. If Slim doesn't get better, he will probably give him something a little stronger.

Well, if it was _you_ though, with the cyst, I would think a topical antibiotic would be sufficient unless an infection developed. Good thing snakes get oral antibiotics rather than injectible, is my understanding. My turtle _hated_ getting a shot every day for ten days.

lol, emanon...

Nanci, not really sure what you are saying there lol. The antibiotic he gave me is a topical antibiotic, but I am supposed to inject it into the lance. If snakes are supposed to have an internal medicine, should I go back and ask about that. He said that what he is using on my snake has worked well with other animals, but he hasn't used it on a snake yet.

Either way, he is about as close to a snake vet as we have around here. He has more experience with lizards and only a little with snakes. Hopefully we can get it all taken care of.

Anyone got any suggestions on getting Slim to eat after this. The vet said to feed him as normal. The previous owner usually fed him once a week but hadn't fed him in two weeks when she gave him to me. I did not feed him to let him get used to his new surroundings and also to make sure he didn't have anything in his gut when I took him to the vet.

I offered today thinking he could use the energy to help him heal. He rejected the rat and I don't blame him. I have planned on feeding him in about a week. It will make it 4 weeks since he has eaten. :eek1: If you have any good info, let me know.

Thanks everyone,
John
