My Pet Hole

Jessicat

All Pied Everything
Almost as exciting as a pet rock, except I can't really take my pet hole with me, and if I was ever caught talking to it...

But every once in awhile I look over and notice that my pet hole has grown fangs, 10 legs, and has turned blue.

My H. Lividum in all her glory, out yesterday.
I was so scared to open the lid of her tank with her being so close to the top like that. It was almost as if she was just laying wait there. She's incredibly fast.

I go a bit crazy with pictures every time she's out.. just can't help it.

Here's her beloved burrow
Tarantula040.jpg

I don't know how she manages to fit herself down there, but even with all the burrowing room I give her she prefers that one small space, and even packed it tighter than I originally built it.

Here's one last shot without flash to show the whole tank. Please excuse the dead plants. She doesn't like light as much as they do.. I'll be revamping the viv soon and removing them.

And now of course the tank's back to being a piece of wood and a silked over hole.

Until next time..

I knew this thread would be about lividium LOL

She is absolutly stunning, I just don't have the guts to own the OW facehuggers just yet. Thats a gorgeous setup too!

Yours is gorgeous! You really captured the blues well!

I hope you don't mind, but here's the last shot I got of my pet hole as well . . . haven't seen her since last March ('07)!! Now that I think of it, I have about 5 different pet holes!! The only T's I see with any regularity are my B. smithi, C. cyaneopubescens, and lately the OBT - P. murinus!

Brent, could be the lighting? My H. Lividum actually looks kind of drab if the light is not shined directly onto her.

It kinda sucks that the best fitting habitat for a lot of Tarantulas are the worst kinds for viewing! I'm looking into getting a few arboreals so that I can actually see them (through their silk retreats:rolleyes:)! I think in a few months I'll try raising an A. Versicolor again and perhaps get an A. Avicularia as well. Elle, your little avics have inspired me to do some sling rearing research!

I think the trick to catching my H. Lividum out is looking over at her cage at odd hours. These shots were taken early in the morning. Sometimes I look over and see her half way out of her burrow, but as soon as I start to walk over she darts back in.

Funny thing is, I think she was out hunting the last few crickets left in her tank. She's been on a 3 day binge and still hungry! I need a better source of crickets then the one I have currently, but I just can't bring myself to raise them.

I'm glad there's a nice base of Tarantula owners on this site! Thanks for posting pictures of your H. Lividum girl, Brent. My H. Lividum has not really lived up to her aggressive name, but she sure is extremely fast. Taken from a care sheet..
Chasing this girl around the room is a most disconcerting experience.
From an extremely short yet horrifying first hand experience, I can say that's putting it quite lightly! As you can see from the pictures though, she pretty much just sits there when I start flashing about. No rearing up or dripping fangs. :shrugs: Now an OBT... that's a spider I'm way to scared to own! Any recent pictures of your P. murinus, Brent? It's okay if they're bad.. I think I'd be too scared to open the top to get a clear shot of the fabled Orange Bitey thingy!

From my short-lived caretaking of some ts (long story, got them rehomed asap), the OBT I had was actually my favorite that I should have kept. She was extremely docile and used to have a wander around her tank @ 6am every day. I never saw any aggressive displays from her, even if I changed her water while she was out exploring.

Mine has no problem living up to her name. Here's a couple of much older pictures, but you get the point! :eek1:

I'm a little uneasy about owning it as well, but I think that makes me more careful about its maintenance. I don't have any updated pics, but I should get some this coming week. Things are settled down around here with coaching done for the year, etc. My OBT lives up to its name as well! Here's a pic I do have the day I got it and released it into the cage:

Brent, those agro pictures are awesome! I think my girl is perhaps scared of me and goes into "deer in the headlights" mode when she sees me.

The other possibility, which Janine, could be the OBT's deal, is that she could have some weird parasite. I got my Cobalt Blue from a pet store, and unfortunately now realize that this means she's most likely wild caught. Did you raise your H. Lividum from a sling Brent?

She stood in that pose for the longest time. Was not happy to be getting a new home that day! When I get her into the deli cup for cleaning or moving, it sounds like someone is twinking the cup . . . HARD!

Mine was also a pet store purchase. I've had her for several years now, so the coast should be clear on that end!

My OBT was CB but I suppose she could have had a parasite:shrugs: I'm not intending to keep t's, but I love seeing the ones being shown on here

Got some new pics today . . . not of the H. Lividum, but at least to show her set-up. I build a tunnel for her and covered it in the hopes that I could merely remove the "cover" and peek in on her. Well, she decided to put up some curtains. doh! In that first picture of her at the entrance, you can see some small pieces of the green crafters foam. She occasionally chews out pieces and brings them up to the surface. Makes me wonder what she's building down there! :eek1:

Thanks for indulging me your thread! PS - I'm setting up a new thread with some updated pics of my OBT.

It's a 5 1/2 gallon tank:
