My Snakey guest, recovering form surgery!

ceduke

Female Wiccan Heretic!!
My aunt and uncle have had Snakey since he was a wee little thing, around 16 years now. Last week a strange lump popped up on his tail. This lump tuned out to be a tumor, so Snakey had surgery yesterday to remove it.

Unfortunately, getting a snake to open his mouth for antibiotics is...er...well...not for everyone! After my aunt told me about several failed attempts, I offered to babysit Snakey for the next three weeks so he can have his antibiotics.

We did his first dose tonight, and I think I'll have my hubby help me next time. I got Snakey's mouth open with a Q-tip no problem, but some of the antibiotics sloshed onto the Q-tip and he did not get a full dose. >.<

Here's Snakey! The blood-tinged spots are from where he's still oozing a little bit, but the surgical site actually looks REALLY good. Sorry for the cell phone pics, I'll try to do better in a day or two. Right now I just want him to hide and relax.

Awesome for you to see him through to good health. Hope mine are still thriving like that at 16. That's too cool.

What a lucky Snakey, that his owners were willing to fix him, rather than the alternative. Nice to see you and him!

Thanks everyone! Snakey's meds were much easier to give tonight because my hubby actually administered them once Snakey's mouth was open! YAY! He has also stopped oozing!

What a gorgeous snake!
Best of luck with everything, and hope Snakey makes a speedy recovery :)

Snakey had his first ever frozen/thawed meal today. He took it like a champ, and I'm going to try again to convince my aunt and uncle to switch him over.

In the meantime, a few pics...

His sutures. The small black spot is of some concern, but it's staying the same size and not oozing or anything, so we're going to see what it looks like after he sheds.

Down the hatch!

Yes, that's a really small prey item. I wanted to go easy on him since he's still healing, plus I'm worried about poop on his sutures!

He was looking for more after he finished that one. In a few days, I'll give him another.

Such a beautiful old boy!
I wish you luck on the f/t switch, it can be a surprisingly hard sell, & after 16 yrs, might be impossible.
Maybe stress his being geriatric? Use the surgery to your advantage in the discussion!

Snakey is back home with his owners! He is eating, pooping, all the usual stuff....we're just waiting on a shed now!!

This was such a wonderful story. Thanks so much for sharing. Snakey is beautiful. Your Aunt is a woman after my own heart.
We have had many Squirreleys, coonies, fishies, and on and on over the years.
