My Yellow Ratsnake

Nanci

Alien Lover
I was driving to my friends Todd and Shellie's house when I got a frantic text message. Snake on the front door. With a picture of a gorgeous yellow rat. Luckily I was a block away, and I sped up and parked. The neighbor lady was out and said her dog had caught a snake but dropped it when told, and the snake had escaped to my friends' entryway. Where it proceeded to terrorize Shellie. I was thrilled to find it flattened into the siding up in the eave and asked Todd to get me a step stool. Shellie was barricaded in the house. I easily plucked the yellow rat out of the siding. It proceeded to musk and bite a little. Shellie ventured out from the house just in time to see it latch onto my forearm and draw blood. She was amazed that I just laughed. I asked for a pillowcase so I could take the snake home where he would be appreciated.

I left him in their garage while we went to see Nightmare on Elm Street (I fell asleep). He was fine when I picked him up, and I drove home with him. Of course I had to do a photoshoot!

Now do I need a yellow ratsnake? Nope! Do I have a spare enclosure? Yup! It's pretty big; five acres. I didn't want him up by the house munching my frogs, anoles and skinks, so I selected a nice stand of trees out in the field. The main mimosa tree has fallen down and is rotting on the ground. I can't mow under there any more. Mr. Snake will be safe. He's close to the pump, too, so he'll have access to water and the things water attracts.

I hoped to get a few pics of him as he disappeared into the underbrush.

Going...

What a pretty snake Nanci! It makes me envious to see how many wild & native snakes you have there in Florida. i don't have many wild types up here in Western Washington- predominately Garters. That is a very nice catch and I really like the natural striping pattern he has.

That is a really nice looking Yellow Rat! I don't recall having seen one with as much black as that one has. I hope that one sticks around and visits you from time to time. :)

Wow! That's got some nice, thick black striping - typical of Northern Florida Yellow Rats (I'm assuming you're in the northern part of the state). I've always wanted to find one like that, but so far the closest I've come is "Greenish" (Yellow/Black Rat intergrades) Rats in South Carolina.

I'm glad the neighbor lady's dog was so well trained.

Although....a wild yellow rat snake kracken on rampage, terrorizing the neighborhood is a dangerous thing.

I'm in Alachua County. North Central, I guess. This one looked to be losing his saddles with very dark stripes. I've seen some that are more faded. More silvery striped.

What a kewl catch, Nanci!!! He sure was pretty. As someone else stated, I hope you see him again someday to update pics!!!

It would be pretty neat if we could cheaply get those subdermal trackers they use to study rattlers around here. I'd have several snakes loaded up already.

This thread totally made my day! Hey, it's nothing but good news, right? A well trained dog, a gorgeous snakey, beautiful photos, and a lovely place for him to live. Thanks for sharing!
