Mystery snake find

Lynnea

That's "lin-NAY-ah"
MY DH is a bicyclist, and being here in SC, I keep hoping that he'll find something other than black snakes to report to me. Well, imagine my excitement when he got back this morning and said, "You want to go see a snake I saw up on Frontage Road? It's got some yellow on it." So I grabbed the camera and we jumped in the van. We got to the place on the road, and there it was lying on the side. I immediately pulled over, threw it in park, and quickly walked up to where it was lying. This is what I found:

It didn't take but a few moments for my brain to register what I was seeing, although I couldn't believe it. Yes, it's true...

A RUBBER SNAKE. Because Roland was riding by so fast, he didn't have a clue what he saw, only that it was a "yellow snake". What it was doing there on a rural road, we'll never know. And the fact it had been run over was obvious. Sigh...maybe someday I'll find the elusive SC wild corn, but not today. Yes, I am keeping it.

LOL I was wondering why the belly looked all caved in and rubbery very funny glad you rushed to the scene:)

:roflmao:That is so funny. When I first saw the pic I was thinking "Ew, that is one dried up dead snake"

~giggles~ I'll bet Roland felt a bit sheepish . . .

Poor thing. Make sure you do the right thing with it's body. Into the recycle bin with it, after all it is recyclable and may come back as a healthy new snake.

That's great! I have one of those in a little "bento box" thing on my bike, that I whipped around to capture one time...

I knew it was rubber the second I saw the picture. Mainly because a friend of mine locally does this sort of thing all the time...

He makes lure molds for Osprey Lure Company. They make the realistic rainbow trout for large mouth and all kinds of really neat lures for fishing...

Anyhow...couple years ago, Steve found a DOR Panamint rattler that was a fairly solid 4' long. He brought it to his shop and made a mold of it. I can't tell you how many people have been fooled by these plastic snakes he makes. He made a Piebald Panamint that was found by at least 10 different people in 10 different locations. Everytime someone found it, they would move it and put it out for someone else to find.

He made one and put it outside of our friend's house, and sat in a bush and waited. Shannon locked up his brakes when he saw it, and got out with his hook. He actually stood next to the thing for a minute and a half waiting for a couple cars to go by before he slid his hook under it...and flipped it completely into the air, because it didn't bend and give the way he expected a real snake would have.

There are some pranksters out there that will purposely put fake snakes on roads known to be cruised by herpers. I've done it, my friends do it, and I've heard plenty of stories of people being fooled by decoys. Wouldn't surprise me if that's why this one was there.

Of course...kids like to throw things out the window of moving cars, too...

Ha, I got fooled too, so it worked on me! lol Thanks for the post, I really enjoyed it. If nothing else, the experience was good for a laugh!

We have an extremely realistic rubber rattler! The boys got me with it the other day! I don't how they got me because it's not like they're native here or anything. Anyway, they were down in our basement going through old boxes of toys and all of a sudden Jonathon and Scooter came running up the stairs and flopped this thing down on my desk! Yep! I jumped! Then realized that it looks like one of our dogs chewed off a good 5" of it's tail! It's now sitting in the back window of our car with our other realistic snakes. I love the reactions we get when we're out!

LOL Funny!! I could tell it was rubber the second I saw it lol.. Reminds me of a situation that happened a few years ago.. The kids in the neighborhood know me as the snake lady lol.. Well oneday one of the girls down the street called me and said they where at the park and there was a snakein the top of one of the playground toys. So we went up there. you could see a tail sticking out of the roof of the shelter. Her and her friend climbed up there. I was like it looks fake or dead. She pulled on its tail , she freaked out screaming and etc because she had touched a supposedly dead snakes tail.. I was like Ceci its fake, she says no its not I saw it move, it was moving. I'm like ok... They fisj it out with a stick and she flings it down on the ground all freaked out. Saying eww its dead etc.. I look over, its a rubber snake.. LOL Hilarious!!!

Since it's in the wild, you apparently can't even touch it, without having the proper permits, complete knowledge of the dietary and environmental needs of Ophidius latexus, three certified care sheets, a complete fumigation and certification of your house, arrangements for four months of quarantine, a body cavity search by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, parental involvement, and a written blessing from each individual ever registered on this forum. Otherwise, you will be Severely Chastised and Berated. :sidestep:
