New Eyelash Viper!! DUW...

MegF.

That's for sale???
Here is the new beauty I picked up at the Columbia show. Wasn't going to get into hots now, but I couldn't pass up the deal. He's so cute you can't believe it. Taking pinky parts he's so small. I named him Button. The pictures aren't the greatest but you get the idea.
"You want a piece of this???"

Oh Meg! He is the most adorable little killer I think I've ever seen! I didn't think you could get any cuter than a baby buzztail, but I have been proven wrong! Congrats on your venture into hots. May it be a rewarding and not-so-lethal one! :D

The eyelash vipers are my favorite hot of all time congrats they he is so pretty and button is an adorable name!!

Meg gorgeous snake but are you sure that you are ready for hots, you said that you got him because the deal was good. I'm not sure that that is a good reason to get into hots. I don't wanna start an arguement but hots are a step that can't be taken lightley. I mean I saw a 45 dollar Gaboon viper on kingsnake that dosent mean I need to buy it. I mean I just scratched the surface of hots using a "training hot" my Black Templed Cat snake which has an moderate rear fanged venom. Also there is no begginer hot but usually Copperheads are the better than eyelashes. Eyelashes are aboreal and aboreal snakes tend to have a nippy disposition. I have a buddy that has one and it is very flippy nervous and unpredictable. Just a thought. Good luck

I did not just buy it because it was a good deal, just got it sooner than I was planning. I've worked with crotalus species as well as some other hots before this and I had eventually planned on having one of these. I've done my research, have my protocols in place, and have a full safety setup for it. I'm careful and make sure there is someone around when working with him. At this point, very little is being done with him. I moved him briefly out of his container to add some holes for ventilation. I have two miniature hooks, wear gloves (he's too small to penetrate thick leather gloves) and put him in a secure container. He has yet to strike except at the pinky I offered him, and only after really harrassing him. They hook well (which is nice)...much more easily than many of the rattlesnakes I've worked with. He hasn't attempted to claim the hook...just wraps his tail on the end and rides it until he gets to his enclosure. I do appreciate the caution though. I keep the danger in mind every minute I'm in the room with him. An accident can prove fatal, and poses a risk to all keepers due to bad publicity. If nothing else, that's reason enough for caution.

David, If I am correct Meg works with ATB's and by all means has the experience to work with another arboreal species...even a hot. I am sure she did her homework and then some and will be able to manage little button just fine.

Yes I know that but a bite from a ATB is different than a bite from a Eyelash. I am sure she did her homework. Heck I have done homework on hots but that dosent mean I am gonna get one

Wow he looks amazing. You will have to keep us updated on him so we can see how he progresses. What a deadly little cutie pie:p. Congratz and Button fits him perfectly.

I think eyelashes are one of the prettiest snakes. Can't wait to see how he progresses as he grows. Congrats on the awesome pickup.

See comments like this start arguements, I said I was just lookin out for her. Just because of my aditude has no effect on my herp knowledge. I mean know a hot is dangerous is just a given

Wow, Meg! I envy your bravery... I can barely handle my Beauty in and out of her cage without having a heart attack, and she's only gotten me once.. And here you are with a viper! Lol! I feel like such a wuss! =) Good luck! Button is ADORABLE... But I think I'll stick to my boas and corns. ;)

On another note.. Tricksterpup, I understand why you're being so skeptical of David giving advice (I've come across way too many of his controversial topics!), but he does mean well here. However unsettling it is to see him giving advice, his heart is in the right place, and it isn't the kind of "advice" that will affect how Meg keeps her hots.

(Meg, sorry for the temporary hi-jack)
David, I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Your heart may be in the right place, but when you're talking to someone like Meg, they already KNOW that hots are dangerous. You don't need to try and impress them with your knowledge and maturity. Meg has ATB's, which are a VERY good "training-hot" (as you put it) for eyelashes due to their arboreal tendencies and willingness to bite. As far as Trickster still seeing you as a jerk, if someone else posted what you posted here in one of YOUR threads, you would have been all over them like white on rice. Trickster made a semi-harmless comment. I can see how your ego would possibly be wounded, but he did have a VERY valid point. The manner your post in which was written was rather condescending, but Meg handled it beautifully, and I commend her for that. The line in bold in the quotes could have very easily been left out of your post, as it sounds like you're trying to call him out to start a fight.

First off...everybody...remain calm :) I took absolutely no offense from David's warning. He's absolutely correct in reminding people how dangerous these animals are. FWIW: I've kept corralus and chondro species for 4 years...I've never been bitten by any of them except one of the ATB's when I was treating him for mites. I'd never consider free handling a hot....as a matter of fact, I hope to not handle him as much as possible. That said, there's no reason for hostility on anyone's part. You can never be too good when handling hots, and even caring for arboreals, semi hots like cats, or any other snake does not change the fact that hots are different. It's a whole new experience to have to wear shoes into the snake room, check before entering the room, making sure there are snake hooks available at the door in case someone gets out. You have to THINK each time you enter the room, concentrate fully when working with them...even if it's just spraying. It's easy to get complacent and figure that I really don't have to put on a glove when opening the cage just in case. I have to remind myself, that although he's small, he's still fully intact. You can never be warned too often. I would never be offended by a reminder...whatever the source.
