New Rescue

Michelle's Candied Corns!
As many of you may know, my beautiful rescue corn snake Shivers was adopted by a GREAT member here last week.

So. That opened the door for a new rescue >.>

It wasn't the plan, but I was at PetCo today and my friend was taking care of all the critters. While I was checking out, he opened a tank on the counter where they keep the "adoptable" animals. I inquired out of curiosity since it appeared reptilian..

Well. It was a tiny baby ball python with tons of sheds stuck on it. Basically, it was returned to the store because of failure in the home. Aka the people who bought it didn't know what they were doing. Poor baby has tons of stuck sheds, eye caps, and the tail tip is dead/dying, and it also has mild mouth rot.

I said to him, I'll take the baby if it's free. He asked if I was serious, I said yes. He went to see his manager, and she asked him "do you trust her?" And he told her that I know more about snakes than anyone in the store, so she said "okay". So in the box the baby went and now we start the long process of recovery.

Here is baby no name! Not sure if it's a boy or girl.

Thanks!! I am a little worried he or she has a blockage. Time will tell. Both of the old eye caps and a bunch of old skin came off after the soak. I'll be leaving him alone now for a few days.

Good for you! Isn't it awesome to know you are helping a creature who must rely on humans for life? And that you have raised the quality of its life immeasurably?

Yay!

(And I like "Reed", it is a great reflection on you!)

I like Reed too! I need to get the baby sexed. I have no idea how to sex a ball python. If it is a boy, we'll go with Reid (had to change the spelling a little). If it's a girl I will be naming her Mayberry.

Oh, here is a pic from this morning. I soaked the baby for a long time last night and got all the old shed and eye caps off. The tip of the tail *may* survive with minor damage. We only lost a very small piece. Doubt it will be noticeable. Can't wait for the shed!

Most of the scabs actually pulled away with the shed. I didn't have a whole lot of time to look over everything this morning. I will when I get home though, open the mouth and all.. If it still looks bad we'll be going to the vet.

Aww, cute sweet baby! So glad you were able to save him/her! S/he is looking better already.

I took in my first ball python rescue 3 weeks ago. (My first snake rescue, even, other than helping my old roommate with a couple boas!) He also had a minor case of mouth rot, caused by a huge rub injury on his lower lip. I swabbed the affected area with diluted chlorhexidine daily per the advice of a more experienced rescuer, and, by the time I got him into the vet a week later, it was pretty much resolved. :) (Now I'm working with my first scale rot case... Also a ball python!)
