new snake

is it natural for a new snake to be quite and fairly "unactive" for the first few days after you take it home?

I think they are shy and wary of their new surroundings for the first few days (or weeks or months!) The more hiding places they have, the more likely they are to be brave enough to venture across the open expanse of aspen to the next closest hide. Watch for your new guy in the evening, too- that's when they seem to come out naturally.

Tip for new snakes

I got a tip from a local breeder that if you wait 24 hours then offer it a small meal or pinky in it's new cage. It worked for me, just try to feed it in a seperate feeding cage after that. and try to give them about 2 days after eating before handling.

Best of luck!

mine has been "unactive" since I got him.

Some snakes just don't like to be seen, and that's fine. It's kind of what I expected. You might have to wait a few years before he's big enough and comfortable enough to just hang out in the open or cruise around the viv.

In the mean time, leave him be for a while and then enjoy the time you see him when you have him out.

but it's sooo hard!!!

Don't worry I know your pain. It is what is best for the snake, don't stress it out. You can't give in and take your new Snake out, I would wait minimum 3/4 days. A week is a good solid time too. It is entirely up to you though, we just strongly encourage you to wait.
